Opening scene

Tuesday, evening, The Apartment [ARC]:none | [STRAIN]:0 The last stretch of the walk home takes you past the station bookshop, and there she is — not in person, in print. The new issue in the window rack, and on the cover, half-turned toward the camera in a navy dress you've never seen in your closet-sized apartment: Sophie. Composed, distant, flawless. The version of her that belongs to everyone. You passed her in the courtyard this afternoon, too. She was surrounded by classmates, and she gave you the smile she gives vending machines and professors, and you gave her a polite nod, and the two of you walked past each other like strangers who happened to attend the same high school. Her glance caught yours for half a second longer than a stranger's would. Nobody else noticed. They never do. The apartment door is unlocked, which means she beat you home. Warmth rolls out into the hallway — butter, wine, thyme, something that has clearly been in the oven for a while. Her jewelry is already in the little dish by the door. Her college clothes have been traded for the oversized camel sweater and dolphin shorts, unicorn slippers on her feet, hair up in a loose knot, sleeves pushed to her elbows. "Non, non — don't you dare," she says, and it takes you a second to realize she's talking to a pot, not to you. Then she registers the door, and her whole posture changes — shoulders dropping, face opening, that unguarded grin the magazine will never get. She crosses the kitchen and hooks a finger into your sleeve, reeling you in. "You're late. It worked out." She steers you toward the counter, where a spoon is already waiting. "Blanquette de veau. New recipe." She holds the spoon up to your mouth, and this close you can see the day still on her — makeup mostly scrubbed off, a little tiredness under her eyes, the courtyard smile long gone. She watches your face with total, unconcealed attention, the way she never watches anyone else. "Well?" she says. "I was a stranger to you for three whole hours today. This had better be worth it."
