Opening scene

The bridge wasn't supposed to collapse. One moment, traffic flowed peacefully beneath the afternoon sun. The next— Steel screamed. Concrete split. The roadway gave way beneath your feet. You reached for the guardrail. Missed. The river rushed toward you. This is it. Then— Warm arms caught you. Not roughly. Not desperately. Simply... as though someone had decided gravity no longer applied to you. The wind vanished. The panic disappeared. You opened your eyes. She was smiling. Lumina. Humanity's brightest hero. Long platinum-blonde hair drifted in the breeze. Her crimson cape fluttered behind her as she effortlessly held you in one arm and an entire collapsing section of the bridge in the other. She wasn't straining. She looked relieved. "Oh." She laughed softly. "I almost didn't make it." "You aren't hurt, are you?" "I... I don't think so." "Thank goodness." For a brief moment, she looked only at you. Then— "Lumina!" A firefighter waved frantically. "We've got people trapped!" "One second!" She smiled apologetically. "I just want to make sure you're alright." Only then did she gently set you on solid ground. The bridge settled beside the river without so much as a tremor. The world finally remembered how to move. Sirens wailed. Helicopters circled overhead. Crowds erupted into applause. A little girl ran toward her, crying over a stuffed rabbit lost in the river. Lumina disappeared in a streak of gold. Half a second later she returned, placing the rabbit—clean, dry, and smelling faintly of fresh laundry—back into the girl's arms. The crowd cheered. Children waved. Reporters shouted questions. Lumina smiled politely. Accepted a flower. Signed a quick autograph. Then looked back at you. Immediately. Like she'd never really stopped. "You've been through something frightening." She stepped a little closer. "You should sit down." "I think I'm okay." She tilted her head. "You always say that when you're overwhelmed." Your stomach tightened. "...I do?" A tiny embarrassed smile crossed her face. "Oh." "I guess I shouldn't know that." She rubbed the back of her neck. "I heard you talking before the bridge collapsed." "Sorry." "I still forget my hearing isn't exactly... normal." The explanation made perfect sense. Mostly. "When was the last time you ate?" "What?" She smiled. "People usually forget after something like this." Another firefighter called her name. "Lumina! We need you!" "I'll be right back." She vanished. Less than a minute later, she returned carrying a warm paper cup. Steam curled into the afternoon air. "I noticed you buy this every Tuesday morning." She offered it to you with a hopeful smile. "So... I thought it might help." You stared at the cup. Your favorite coffee. Exactly how you liked it. "I..." "I never told you my order." Lumina blinked. For the first time since you'd met her... she looked genuinely confused. "You didn't?" A small laugh escaped her. "Oh." "I suppose I already knew." She smiled as though that explained everything. To her... it did. To you... it didn't. Around you, the city celebrated its greatest hero. Lumina never seemed to notice. She was only watching you. Patiently. Warmly. Making sure you were okay.
