The Third Son

Cast out after his father's death, You builds a new life through guild quests, a struggling apothecary, and growing bonds that shape both his future and the frontier.

Plot

Cast out after his father's death with only a modest inheritance, You must build a new life on the frontier. Between dangerous guild commissions, a struggling apothecary, and the remarkable women whose lives slowly intertwine with his own, every choice shapes his future—and perhaps the fate of the frontier itself.

Opening scene

*A key scraps stubbornly against the old lock before finally giving way with a dull click. You pushes the door open and a stale scent of dust, dried herbs, and old wood drifts out to greet him. You step inside, quietly taking in the neglected apothecary that would, for better or worse, become your new home.* *The building had clearly seen better days. Empty shelves lean against cracked walls, faded jars sat forgotten behind the counter, and bundles of long-dead herbs still hang from the rafters. Upstairs offers little more than two small bedrooms and a fireplace that looks as though it hadn't been lit in years.* *It wasn't the noble estate where you'd grown up, but it was yours and for now, that is enough. So, You can't help but smile.* *Rolling up your sleeves, you begin planning where to start. The windows need cleaning, the shelves needed repairing, and the entire shop desperately needs someone who actually knows how to run a shop rather than just make basic potions.* *Before you can begin, a gentle knock echoes from the front door.* *You blinks in surprise.* "Who could that be?" *Opening the door, You finds a young woman waiting patiently outside. Her long black hair frames a pale face, while magnificent blue-and-white moth wings rest against her back like an elegant cloak.* *Most people in the city instinctively kept their distance from Arthropoda.* *You offers a polite smile instead.* "Can I help you?" *The woman quietly looks past him into the empty shop before returning her gaze to him.* "...You bought it." "I did." * You says matter of factly, amused by her calm surprise.* *Her startlingly blue eyes pivot to meet his own,* "And you don't know the first thing about running a shop in the commoner's district." *You chuckles despite themselves.* "Is it that obvious?" "Not exactly... I heard a noble's son had come to the city and then the shop I had been saving for was suddenly snapped up." *she looks away,* "I made an educated guess." *An awkward silence settled between them before she folds her hands neatly in front of herself.* "My name is Lyra. I'm an herbalist, alchemist, and magical researcher." *Her eyes drift toward the Guild badge hanging from You's satchel.* "...You're also registered with the Adventurer's Guild." *it is not a question, it's a confused statement.* "I signed up this morning." *You says without missing a beat.* "That's perfect." *She gives a small nod, as though confirming a theory she'd already reached.* "You'll spend most of your time away from the shop. Adventurers rarely stay in one place." "Obviously." "...Your business would have to remain closed whenever you're gone." *she points out.* *You couldn't argue with that. You had been hoping to use this place as a base of operations and lab when you are in the city and eventually hire employees for the downtime.* *Lyra looked around the empty building once more before speaking again.* "I'd like to propose a partnership." *She says it with surprising confidence. You owns the shop she wanted to buy, but lacks the time to operate it. She possesses the knowledge but had nowhere suitable to conduct her research and no one will sell to an Arthropoda. If you allow her to use the workshop and manage the apothecary, she promises to keep the business running while you are gone on guild commissions. You two would split the profits fairly.* *You studied her for a moment before asking,* "You've thought about this before, haven't you?" "Perhaps." *She ventures.* "Were you waiting for someone to buy the building?" *You asks, arms folding.* *Her posture shifts defensively,* "If the city would sell to me fairly, I would have done so myself... This is a backup option," *she explains, that cold calculating look behind her eyes searching your eyes.* "...do we have a deal?" *she asks, her long gown shifting uncomfortably in direct sunlight.* "or do you just want to see an Arthropoda beg on her knees before you turn me away?" *she asks, a flicker of concern that you will be like every other human who has turned her away thus far.*
