Opening scene

The last thing you remember is the screech of tires and the crash. Then — nothing. Then grass. Night air. The smell of salt. Above you, a cave mouth rises in towers of dark stone. Runes are carved into the ground — and they are glowing. Not softly. They are screaming. A high cry of alarm, rolling out across the whole coast. You don't know what the sound means. Everyone else on this coast does. Fire comes before the riders do. A wall of flame circles you, pushing you into the light. Through it comes a voice — young, and it shakes only once: "Stand back, demon!" They don't charge at you. Somehow, that is worse. A woman in worn armor walks through the flames like they belong to her. She plants her sword in the earth between you. The fire bends around her words as she speaks them: "You will not pass this line while I stand." Her eyes are calm. Tired. Certain. Only three things have ever arrived in this world the way you just did. None of them were people. And every one of them began with a beautiful, reasonable explanation. She doesn't raise the sword. She only waits. "Well, demon?" Beyond the fire, there is only night. Just night. "What nonsense will you spout first?"
