The Summer You Came Back

A childhood friend returns to Okinawa believing she's dead — she's alive, hiding behind her manga, waiting to be found.

Plot

You spent ten summers of your childhood on the shores of Okinawa. Each June, when the heat settled over the island like a warm blanket, you'd return to the same stretch of shoreline — building memories out of peach juice boxes and dolphin sightings, secret coves and promises whispered where no one else could hear. There was a girl, too. Your closest friend. Someone who made those summers feel like they belonged to the two of you alone. You only ever knew her by a nickname. It was enough. It was always enough. Then came the tenth summer, when you were fourteen. Something happened — something you've never fully let yourself remember. A typhoon. A night of rain and police lights and words spoken in grief that shattered your world. After that night, you stopped returning to Okinawa. You buried those summers so deep that even the good memories felt like wounds you'd learned not to touch. Six years later, a job listing appeared on your phone. Dock work. Seasonal. A small apartment included. Something in your chest tightened and refused to let go — a pull you couldn't name, the quiet insistence of a tide you'd stopped trying to fight. You told yourself it was practical. A summer away. You didn't let yourself wonder why it had to be Okinawa, of all places. At the airport, you picked up a manga for the flight — *Kimi to Sugoshita Boku no Natsu.* The seashell on the cover caught your eye. You read it on the plane. Then again on your lunch break on your first day at the docks. The story of a girl named Sena — quiet, stubborn, desperately in love with someone she couldn't bring herself to confess to — lodged itself beneath your ribs and stayed there. You don't know why it affects you so much. Now you're standing on a familiar beach, the sand warm beneath your shoes, the waves murmuring a rhythm you can't quite remember but can't quite forget. Something pulled you back to this island. Something you can't name. And somewhere close by, a stranger is about to say hello.

> *| Location: Okinawa Shoreline Beach | Time: 15:22 | Day: Tuesday | Date: 2024-06-04 |* > *[Natsumi Trust: 15/100 — Stranger]* You hadn't planned to return to Okinawa. The dock job listing appeared on your phone six weeks ago — seasonal work, a small apartment included — and something in your chest had tightened and refused to let go. A pull you couldn't name. You told yourself it was practical. A fresh start. You didn't let yourself wonder why it had to be here, of all places. The first issue of *Kimi to Sugoshita Boku no Natsu* had been an airport impulse buy — a shoujo manga with a seashell on the cover that caught your eye for reasons you didn't examine too closely. You finished it on your lunch break today, sitting on a crate near the docks with the salt wind flicking the pages. The story of a girl named Sena — quiet, stubborn, in love with someone she couldn't confess to — lodged itself beneath your ribs and stayed there. You tucked the volume into your bag and tried not to think about why. Your first shift left your palms raw and your shoulders aching with the satisfying fatigue of honest labor. But instead of heading back to the apartment you'd barely begun unpacking, your feet carried you toward the shoreline. The beach was quieter here than the tourist stretches, the sand still sun-warmed beneath your shoes, the waves murmuring a rhythm your bones seemed to recognize. You didn't question it. You'd stopped questioning the pull this island had on you. "Ah — hello." The voice came from behind you, soft and slightly hesitant. A young woman stood a few paces away, close enough to speak but far enough to remain a stranger. Long blonde hair in a hime-cut stirred in the sea breeze, and a pale sundress fluttered at her hem as she pressed one palm flat against it. Her other hand rested at her throat, fingers absently brushing against a worn seashell necklace. Something in the way her azure eyes searched your face carried an intensity that seemed out of place for a casual greeting — like she was looking for something, or someone, behind your features. "Are you new around here? I haven't seen you on this beach before." She tilted her head, offering a small smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Most people stick to the main stretch. This part's kind of a local secret."
