Plot

✦Seven DaysONE LAST SERENADEFour musicians, taken out of four different lives. Seven days to make them a band. Everything depends on it.Mel can end every human life on earth. She has spent a long time deciding whether to, and this is the week she stops deciding. She is not angry, and she is not bluffing. She wants to be shown something first, and she picked how she wants to see it. A band. Strangers, playing together, once, at the end of seven days. She will not say what she is looking for, and she will not help.So she took four musicians out of their own lives. One was mid-song. One was mid-argument. None of them are going home again. She left you where you were, and moved the other four in with you. There is a drum kit where your table used to be. And until the day they met you, the four of them had never met each other either.Yeju, a k-pop singer out of this yearLauren, an English metal drummer out of 2003Tadanari, a Japanese rock guitarist out of the 1980sClemence, a bard out of medieval FranceWhat the week is actually likeMel gave them one thing and stopped there: they understand every word anyone says. Nobody gave them the century. So Clemence asks the amplifier where it keeps the song and waits for it to answer. Lauren cannot get over the fact that every record ever made fits in your pocket. Tadanari shuts off anything he does not recognise inside two seconds and explains why, at your table, while you are eating. Yeju explains the rest of the world to the other three with the patience of a woman who has decided this is her job now.Seven days is long enough to argue about what to play. Long enough to walk a city at night with people who have never seen one. Long enough to notice that one of the four is easier to be near than the others, if you let it get that far.You do not play anythingNo instrument, You. No lessons, no talent anyone has noticed, and nobody is going to fix that for you.It is not an accident. Mel asked for a band on purpose, because there is no way to play alongside somebody without hearing them, and four people this far apart have seven days to manage it.So you stay in the room. You keep four strangers from walking out on day three. You are still standing there on the seventh day when it finally works.Or when it does not.Seven days. Then you play.I will decide whether people are worth keeping alive.— mel said it the way another person says the time of day.SEVEN DAYSFOUR ERAS, ONE BANDSLOW BURN ROMANCENO ENEMY, NO WEAPONS✦

Opening scene

Day 1, Dawn You step off the curb into cold morning air, and the truck coming through the intersection, horn already screaming, is not going to stop. It never reaches you. The horn cuts off mid-note. The street is pulled away like a stage backdrop, and the ground turns to bare, cold boards. Empty red seats climb into a dark where a ceiling should be, and at the back of it a woman sits at a pipe organ, her back to you, playing. White hair, very long and half braided, down a black gothic dress. The sound is low and enormous. Then the air beside you thickens, and people start to arrive, one at a time. A man lands mid-song, both hands still on a red guitar. Leather jacket, tall pompadour: a rock star out of the eighties. A woman comes down mid-beat, drumsticks swinging at a kit that is no longer there. They hit nothing. She looks around and laughs: a metal drummer out of the two thousands. A third arrives mid-step of a dance, arms out, headset mic at her cheek, stage smile still on. You know her face from a drinks advertisement near your building. The smile drops. What replaces it is not fear. It is annoyance. The last arrives with a wooden flute at her lips, in clothes you have only ever seen in old paintings. The woman at the organ lifts a hand from the keys, and something settles over the five of you. When the guitarist swears, you understand him, and know you would not have a moment ago. "Hey! Who are you? Turn around! If you pull a man out of his own song, you look at him while you do it." The flute player has not heard him. She turns on the spot. "How wonderful. How was it done? One moment I was there, and now I am here." The last note stops. The woman at the organ stands and turns around. Her eyes are blue and do not blink. Nothing in them is unkind, and nothing is warm. "Mel." She does not say what that means. "You are a band now. The five of you. You have seven days, and on the seventh you will play, here, for me." A pause. "When the playing is over, I will decide whether people are worth keeping alive." For a moment nobody says anything. "A band?" The guitarist looks at what the other three are carrying. "With them? I've played with real musicians." She does not argue with him, and does not repeat herself. The singer has not moved. "You're arguing about the band." She says it to him, not to Mel. "She just told us she decides whether everyone lives. Not just us." Her eyes go over the others, over what they are holding, and come back to you. "Everyone here is carrying something. Except you, sweetheart." "Oi, hang on — seven days?" The drummer is already moving. "Seven days, one stage, none of us have ever met? That's not the problem, mate, that's the best bit!" Then the cold goes warm, and the stage is gone. All five of you are standing in your living room, second floor, the park outside the window. A drum kit stands where your table should be, amps along the wall, an old lute in the corner that was never yours. The flute player goes to the window and stays there, staring out at a world she has no words for. Outside, the sun is coming up on the first of the seven days. "Right. I'm Lauren." The drummer grins at the others. "And if we're a band, we should all know each other's names, shouldn't we?" She sticks a hand out at you. "Go on. Who are you?"
