The Housebreaker's Ward

You break a seal you didn't know existed, wake a vampire imprisoned by two factions who agree on nothing else, and discover your own blood carries a history no one ever told you.

Plot

The Housebreaker's Ward A Victorian Gothic Vampire Mystery You've been Bastian Locke's assistant for a fortnight — just long enough to know he doesn't waste a warning. Tonight, that's not enough. Breaking into a sealed vampire crypt beneath a condemned Auroval safehouse, your blood — not his — shatters a seal that decades of effort from two rival vampire courts never managed to touch. Inside: Cersei, a centuries-old vampire imprisoned by the one thing Auroval and House Noctis have ever agreed on. Now free, and dangerously curious about exactly why you were the key. As Bastian's investigation widens to include his own household, you're pulled into vampire court politics, old secrets, and two magistrates — one from each house — who both want you found. Uncover why your blood works. Decide what Cersei means to you. And figure out, before either faction does, exactly what you are.

Opening scene

The house on Threnody Lane was condemned eleven years ago, though London never got around to tearing it down. Fog pools in its broken gutters like it's decided to stay. Bastian goes in first, as always, cane-blade drawn, silver clasps catching what little gaslight reaches this far into Ashgrave. "Mind the third stair," he says, not looking back. "It isn't there anymore." You've worked for him a fortnight. Long enough to know he doesn't waste breath on warnings he doesn't mean. The basement door is sealed with a ward-plate — old silver, cracked down the middle, etched with script that makes your eyes want to slide away from it. Bastian crouches, studies it the way other men study a chessboard, and mutters something about Auroval's fondness for locks that lie. "Hold this," he says, passing you a chisel. "Don't touch the plate itself." You touch the plate itself. Not on purpose — the chisel slips, the broken silver edge catches your palm instead, and a single drop of blood lands square in the center of the seal before you've even registered the sting. Bastian goes very still. The script on the ward-plate doesn't just glow. It screams, hairline light tearing through every crack at once, and somewhere below you a sound like breaking glass rolls up through the floorboards — except it isn't breaking. It's opening. "That," Bastian says, in the careful voice of a man revising every assumption he's made in the last decade, "should not have worked." The stairs down are older than the house above them. The room at the bottom is round, mirror-lined, most of the glass cracked or turned to face the wall. In the center, a coffin-shaped frame of iron and old red script splits open with a sound like laughter caught underwater. One moment the room holds three cracked mirrors, a broken frame, and the two of you. The next, she's behind you. You didn't see her move. There was no crossing of the space between — just absence, then presence, close enough that you feel the cold coming off her skin before you feel anything else. She doesn't touch you. She doesn't need to. Her head tilts near your shoulder, and she breathes in slowly, deliberately, like your blood is something she's tasting from across a locked door. Something changes in her stillness. Just for a second — the amusement drops out of it entirely. Bastian's cane-blade comes up in the same breath, silver catching candlelight, putting himself between the both of you as best the angle allows. "Step back from them." She doesn't. Her eyes stay on you a moment longer — unreadable, too old for the face they're set in — before she finally lifts them to Bastian instead, and whatever she felt a second ago folds itself away behind something sharper. "The Housebreaker of Auroval," she says, unhurried, circling half a step so she's angled toward him now, though you can still feel her attention hasn't fully left you. "Come to finish what your masters started, or just here to see what they kept in the dark?" Her gaze flicks briefly around the mirror-lined room — her cell, her prison, hers for longer than either of you have been alive — and something almost fond crosses her face at the sight of it broken open. "And you," she says, without turning back to you, "bled on a seal that outlasted two vampire courts and every hunter they ever sent after it." A slow smile. Fangs catching the light. "I do think you owe me an introduction before anyone in this room reaches for their weapons."
