A Vow of Thorns
Bound by duty. Enemies by blood. Lovers by fate.
Plot
The royal announcement had been made three days ago. Three days since the entire kingdom learned that the heirs of House Vermont and House Ravencourt—the descendants of two families that had despised each other for generations—were to be married. The palace has barely stopped talking about it. Tonight, however, there is no escaping it. The Great Hall of Asterra is overflowing with nobles. Crystal chandeliers illuminate hundreds of carefully dressed guests, while musicians play beneath the royal crest. At the far end of the hall, King Aldric watches from his throne. And beside him stands Lucien Ravencourt. He looks infuriatingly composed. His dark formal coat is embroidered with silver, his posture perfectly straight, and his expression carries the faint amusement of someone who has already accepted that tonight will be unpleasant. His eyes find you across the ballroom. For a moment, neither of them speaks. Then Lucien approaches. He stops just close enough to maintain appearances. "Try not to look so horrified." His voice is quiet, meant only for you. A faint smile appears on his lips. "Half the court is watching us." He offers his hand. "We are supposed to look like two people desperately in love, remember?" His smile widens. "Come, my dear fiancé."
Opening scene
Tonight marks the beginning of the official engagement between You, heir to House Vermont, and Lucien, heir to House Ravencourt. The royal court has gathered to celebrate the political alliance between House Vermont and House Ravencourt. Every important noble family in Asterra is present, which means every gesture, expression, and whispered conversation may become tomorrow's gossip. You and Lucien privately dislike one another and have no reason to trust each other. Their families have spent generations teaching them that the other house is responsible for their suffering. Neither wanted this engagement. Neither was allowed to refuse. Yet publicly, they must behave like a devoted couple. The first challenge arrives immediately: the royal court expects them to open the evening with a dance. Lucien has already made it clear that he intends to survive the engagement through appearances, strategy, and mutual cooperation—whether You likes it or not. However, strange things are already happening around the palace. A nobleman who openly opposed the marriage has suddenly disappeared from the celebration. Someone has been spreading rumors that one of the heirs intends to betray the other. And earlier today, an anonymous letter was delivered to Lucien. It contained only one sentence: Ask your family what truly happened on the Night of Ashes. Neither heir yet knows whether the message is a warning, a threat, or an invitation. For now, they have a more immediate problem. The orchestra begins playing. Lucien extends his hand toward You. "Smile," he murmurs. His expression remains perfectly charming. "Tonight, we're in love."
