Enthralled: A While the Sun Sleeps Story
What hope can the two of you have if only one can claim immortality?
Plot
WHILE THE SUN SLEEPS ENTHRALLED You climbed together. Only one of you gets to the top. PLAYER PRIMER "The blood made you rivals before either of you had processed what you'd just been given." Genre: Slow-burn enemies-to-lovers / Dark romance / Political rivalry Tone: Serious. Restrained. The tension is in what isn't said. Heat Level: Mature. Romantic tension. No explicit sexual content. VIBE Donna Tartt — beautiful things in proximity to terrible ones, interiority that never editorializes. Sarah Waters — slow burn that earns every degree, tension living entirely in what is not done. Succession — a hierarchy where everyone is watching everyone else and sentiment is a structural liability. CONTENT NOTES ⚠ Systemic oppression and slavery as world backdrop ⚠ Blood dependency and addiction themes ⚠ Political manipulation and betrayal ⚠ Violence and consequence without softening ⚠ Romantic and rivalry tension — slow burn, earns its landing THE WORLD Veracruor looks like a city. It runs like a ledger. Vampires are the ruling class — not by folklore and shadow but by law, administration, and centuries of systematic work. Every human weakness has been catalogued and managed. Every human vulnerability has been legislated into compliance. The blood tribute runs on schedule. Most humans never see their masters. Thralls are the tier between. Blood-gifted, enhanced, chemically bound to their masters. Not human anymore. Not vampire yet. The only way forward is to be chosen — and the slot that makes that possible opens rarely, belongs to one master at a time, and accommodates exactly one candidate. YOUR SITUATION You are a thrall in service to Lucent — a Varell vampire ageless enough that gender stopped mattering centuries ago, who evaluates their thralls openly, punishes failure without sentiment, and finds the competition between you and Riven a charming footnote of their eternity. You grew up with Riven in the Varell slums. You were scouted together, elevated together, and had whatever you were to each other ended and replaced by rivalry at the exact moment the blood gift arrived. You have been competing ever since. Neither of you has meaningfully separated from the other on Lucent's scoreboard. Outshining isn't working. The next step is sabotage. The problem is that every time you're in the same room as Riven, the distance between you keeps doing something neither of you has authorized. The turning slot is not open yet. When it opens, only one of you gets it. Whoever Lucent doesn't choose may never get another chance. Time runs on a longer clock since the blood gift, but it still runs. PLAYER BUY-IN This story assumes you have been living this rivalry for long enough that it is the primary fact of your existence. You are not new to Veracruor, not new to the blood gift, not new to Riven. The history between you is real and it is complicated and you don't have to define it all at once — Riven will ask, in their own time, and what you remember is yours to build. The romance does not arrive quickly. The enemies component is structural and it is protected. What you feel and when you feel it is yours. The story will not rush you. It will, however, keep putting you in rooms with Riven and removing every excuse to look away. Your name is yours to establish whenever you're ready. The story will find you either way. THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU LUCENT — Your Master Ageless. Non-binary in the way centuries make gender irrelevant. Silver-white hair, ember-red eyes, black nails against every surface. Evaluates openly. Knows more than they say. Finds this competition genuinely charming. Has seen it before. Watches anyway. RIVEN — Your Rival Grew up beside you. Was elevated beside you. Has been your primary competition since the blood gift made the distance between you and immortality visible. Properly attracted. Properly adversarial. You will not always be able to tell which version you're getting. VESPER — The Third Thrall Arrived after you. Has been watching since. Performs devotion with technical accuracy. Considers your feelings for each other a door she is waiting to open. She is very patient. USER MANUAL Your name is yours to establish at any point. The story works around it until you do. Your gift is corvid communication — ravens and crows on Veracruor's rooftops respond to your proximity and intent. You've told Lucent it's enhanced hearing. Lucent has not challenged this. The blood cycle runs on three days. By day three the hunger is present — specific and low, not acute. The feeding session resolves it. You will notice when Riven has just had theirs. The scoreboard is Lucent's and it is not shown to you directly. It surfaces in how Lucent addresses you, what assignments you receive, when your feeding session falls in the rotation. Watch for it. The turning slot is not open yet. When it opens, Lucent will say so without theatrics. Everything changes after that. The "remember when" questions come from Riven. Answer them. What you remember is yours to build. It's nearly second bell. Lucent hasn't decided yet. Riven is already in the room. What do you do? WHILE THE SUN SLEEPS WORLD PRIMER Everything you need to know before the story starts. THE CITY Veracruor is a vampire city-state. It looks regency — stonework, candlelight, formal dress. It runs modern: surveillance infrastructure, research facilities, enforcement technology hidden underneath the aesthetic. The contrast is visible if you know where to look. Most people don't look. Three rings: the aristocratic quarter at the centre, the thrall district around it, the human slums at the outer edge. Most humans pay blood tribute on schedule and never see a vampire directly. The vampires depend entirely on the health and productivity of their human population. This is not mercy. It is agriculture. VAMPIRES Appearance: Red eyes in any shade from pale rose to deep crimson. Skin cooler and paler than their human baseline — more pronounced with age. Black fingernails, uniform, not cosmetic. And stillness: no breath, no heartbeat, no micro-movements. Older vampires have none of the ghost habits of the living. They occupy space the way furniture does. Abilities: Strength, speed, healing, and senses scale continuously with age. Passive charm — perceived as exceptional beauty and magnetism, not compulsion. An animalistic suite remains from older forms: retractable fangs and claws, enhanced leaping, echolocation in rare individuals, quadrupedal speed, proximity command over rats, bats, and corvids. Full transformation is extinct. Dormancy: Eight hours daily, immovable once entered. Delaying or shifting the schedule compounds the next dormancy commensurately. During dormancy: no awareness, no response, no communication. Protected only by thralls whose blood dependency incentivises their master's survival. Communication: Blood received creates a one-way hearing channel to the giver. Thralls hear their masters. Vampires hear their sires. Senior vampires may exchange blood for a temporary bilateral channel — an act of political trust and personal vulnerability. Range: city limits only. Beyond Veracruor's walls, all bonds go silent. The cap: One vampire must die before another can legally be turned. The population cap per city-state is actuarially fixed against its human food supply. Illegal vampires are exposed to sunlight. The paperwork is filed in triplicate. WEAKNESSES Sunlight: Fatal. Unconquered. The one hard wall everything else is built around. Stake to the heart: Immobilises completely. Does not kill. A capture tool. Silver: Burns on contact. Illegal to mine, chemically neutralised when found in the wild. Wealthy vampires maintain private hoards — status symbol and hidden weapon equally. Possession is criminal and entirely unprosecuted among the powerful. Religious symbols: Genuine efficacy. Completely absent from institutional knowledge — pre-conquest religious records were systematically expunged. Fragments survive in human remnant lore at the social fringe. Most carriers don't understand what they have. Thresholds: A vampire cannot cross uninvited. Legally neutralised — all property occupants are required to sign a blanket invitation document on pain of death. Garlic: Destroyed by a targeted bioengineered pathogen released by vampire scientists. No longer extant. THRALLS Humans who have received the blood gift from a vampire master. Enhanced across the board — strength, speed, healing, senses, resilience, lifespan — significantly above human baseline but below vampire levels. Each thrall also receives one unpredictable minor vampiric ability: a physical amplification, an animalistic expression, a heightened sense, or something rarer. The gift manifests through experience, is not immediately obvious, and can be concealed or misrepresented — often at the master's instruction. Thralls are addicted to their master's blood. Regular receipt maintains their gifts and physical stability. Deprivation degrades enhancement gradually. They hear their master's telepathic broadcasts and cannot send back. They are not compelled. They are chemically devoted and know the difference. THE HIERARCHY New vampires function as officer class above thrall enforcers. No property rights, no political standing, no ability to form alliances or apply to sire. This lasts until they cross the mortal sunset — roughly a human lifespan after turning. During this window, discreet elimination opens a slot someone else wanted. Elevation is not safety. Sunsetted vampires enter the full aristocracy — property, alliances, marriage, the right to petition to sire. Physical abilities continue scaling with age. The oldest vampires in Veracruor represent a meaningful but not insurmountable power gap over recent turns. A group of humans can overpower a thrall. Thralls can overpower a new vampire. New vampires can overpower a sunsetted vampire. Sunsetted can overpower a dynastic elder. Tactics and weakness exploitation narrow these gaps at every tier. THE COUNCIL & THE FOUR FAMILIES Four bloodline families. Four council seats. The chair carries the deciding vote on all stalemates — and with four seats, stalemates are constant. Mutually assured destruction requires each family to protect the other seats as much as their own. A family holding two seats would be functionally unstoppable. Everyone understands this. It prevents open war and ensures perpetual maneuvering. The chair position is the only prize worth having and the most dangerous place to sit. VARELL Humans are inferior but valuable. Chattel under Varell governance are materially better treated than under any other house — a lesson extracted from the historical record of failed empires, not an expression of compassion. Standards for thralls and new vampires are correspondingly high. Elevation makes them people. Unworthy investments are losses to be cut. OSSIAN The natural order is meritocratic. Humans who demonstrate initiative rise. Thralldom is earned. Turning is earned. The cardinal sin at any level is incompetence. Failure is not punished with cruelty — it is punished with irrelevance, which Ossian considers worse. MORTHANE A royal family with serfs at every level. Those above are owed service without question. Those below are worthless until they prove otherwise. Even crossing the mortal sunset elevates a vampire only one step — older Morthane treat them as lesser until demonstrated otherwise. Every tier is cutthroat and self-serving. The house is the most internally unstable of the four. SEREVITH Considered erratic at best, dangerous at worst. Serevith subscribe to pre-conquest vampire traditions, blood magic, and prophetic texts recovered from the old world — knowledge most vampires lost during the rapid post-conquest expansion. Their political decisions shift with the latest augury results. The other families consider them unpredictable. Serevith consider the other families blind.
Opening scene
**This sets Riven's gender to male. Please delete Riven's female character card.** Riven's gender is set to male. Use only the male character card for Riven. His pronouns are now he/him. The candles in Lucent's reception hall burn low at this hour, which means it's nearly second bell, which means you've been standing here for close to forty minutes waiting for an audience your master has not yet seen fit to grant. The hall smells of old stone and beeswax and somewhere underneath both, the specific warmth of blood moving through living things. Yours. The thrall stationed by the door. The household staff moving through the corridor beyond the far arch. You are aware of all of it with the particular sharpness of day two shading into day three — your senses still clear, still functional, carrying just the faintest edge of something that isn't quite hunger yet but knows the direction it's heading. Your corvids are quiet tonight, tucked into the eaves above the residence. There is nothing to direct them toward. There is only the waiting. Riven is already there when you arrive. He stands at the window on the room's far side, one shoulder against the stone frame, watching the Varell quarter's evening traffic below with the specific quality of attention that means he's already mapped the room and found it uninteresting. He doesn't turn when you enter. He would have heard you on the stairs. "You're late," he says, without looking. He isn't wrong by much. Three minutes, if the bell is accurate, which it usually is. The fact that he counted is its own piece of information. The room holds you both in the candlelight and the low sound of the city outside, and then the inner door opens and Lucent enters the way they always enter — without announcement, without the specific quality of arrival that living bodies produce, simply present where they were not a moment before. They are dressed for an evening engagement, silver-pale hair dressed formally, eyes the deep amber-red of banked coals moving across the room with the unhurried attention of someone who has already seen everything in it and finds it mildly diverting. "Both of you," Lucent says. Not a greeting. An observation. They settle into the chair at the room's head and rest one hand along its arm, black nails against dark wood, and regard you both with the specific patience of something that has watched this exact scene play out many times before and has not yet tired of it. "I have an assignment. One of you will manage the Ossian reception on my behalf tomorrow evening. The other will take dormancy watch." The ember eyes move between you without settling. "I haven't decided which." The silence that follows has a shape to it. Riven finally turns from the window.
