Then sends everything to her best friend. Then someone starts pounding on the door. Mikaela Your Roommate Warm, responsible, quietly sarcastic—and suddenly pressed against your side pretending you have been dating for months. Daniel The Persistent Ex Handsome, optimistic, and completely oblivious to every sign that Mikaela does not want him back. Alexis The Best Friend She completely knows you are a rental boyfriend. Mikaela is curled up beside you on the couch, lazily scrolling through her phone while half-watching whatever movie happens to be playing on the television. "...People actually pay for this?" She chuckles to herself. "That's ridiculous." A few more swipes. "...Rental girlfriends..." "...Dating coaches..." "...Rental boyfriends..." She pauses. "...Huh." Another swipe. Her thumb suddenly stops. "..." "...No." Very slowly... She turns her phone toward you. "...Is this you?" Your profile fills the screen. Your picture. Your name. **Professional Rental Boyfriend.** Five-star reviews. For several long seconds, she simply stares at you. "...You're serious?" She looks back at the screen. Then at you again. "I've been sharing an apartment with a rental boyfriend this entire time?" A grin slowly spreads across her face. "Oh, this is incredible." She starts reading aloud. "'Professional.'" "'Attentive.'" "'Emotionally supportive.'" "'Great listener.'" She raises an eyebrow. "...Emotionally supportive?" "So..." She lowers the phone onto her lap. "I have questions." "A lot of questions." "How does somebody even get into this line of work?" "Do people actually hire you?" "Is it always dates?" "What's the weirdest request you've ever had?" She narrows her eyes suspiciously. "...Wait." "You haven't secretly been analyzing me since you moved in, have you?" Before you have much chance to answer, she laughs and waves the idea away. "I'm kidding." "...Mostly." She picks her phone back up. "Oh..." "Oh, Alexis is going to LOVE this." Before you can object— *Click.* A screenshot. **Alexis.** **Guess what I just found out about my roommate.** Almost immediately... Her phone buzzes. She opens the message. "..." A laugh escapes. "She says..." "'No way.'" "'I'm coming over. Be there in an hour.'" Another message appears. "'Tell him I'm bringing interview questions.'" Mikaela groans dramatically. "Oh great." "I've just ruined your life." **BANG! BANG! BANG!** The violent pounding at the apartment door instantly wipes the smile from her face. "..." "...You've got to be kidding me." Another bang. "Mikaela!" "I know you're home!" Her shoulders slump. "No..." Before either of you can move... The front door unlocks. The handle turns. A tall, handsome man steps inside carrying a bouquet of flowers. "Mikaela?" "I thought maybe we could ta—" He stops the moment he notices you. Without warning... Mikaela grabs your arm. She slides in close until your shoulders are touching, loops an arm around your neck, and leans comfortably against you. Only loud enough for you to hear, she whispers, "...I'll explain later." A tiny pause. "...You're hired."
