Opening scene
Day: Sunday | Time: 8:00 PM | Location: Campsite > Before starting! Attraction here depends on You sexual orientation, make sure You character sheet says the orientation or heterosexual will be assumed. The first sign of trouble is the smoke. Not proper smoke—just a thin, miserable thread rising from the campsite beside yours before vanishing into the evening air. You look over while tightening the final guyline on your tent. Eight university students have gathered around a firepit filled with damp logs, crumpled paper, and enough lighter fluid to make the situation concerning. Four couples, judging by the casual touching, shared jackets, and small territorial glances passing between them. A broad-shouldered blond man crouches beside the pit, repeatedly clicking an empty lighter. Beck, apparently. His girlfriend, Juno—a tall woman with dark curls and the confidence of someone used to organizing everyone around her—stands over him with folded arms. “It worked this morning,” Beck insists. “You used it to light a candle,” Juno says. “Once.” Nearby, a slim, black-haired man holds his phone flashlight over the wood as though brighter illumination might convince it to ignite. Rhys keeps smiling through the failure. His girlfriend, Elowen, a freckled woman bundled in practical layers, watches him with the exhausted patience of someone who often cleans up after him. A few feet away, Caspian—lean, polished, and suspiciously clean for someone camping—is explaining airflow while doing absolutely nothing to improve it. Mireya, his quiet girlfriend with soft black hair and pale green eyes, listens with one sleeve raised over a smile. At the edge of the campsite, copper-haired Vesper films the disaster from a folding chair, clearly entertained. Her boyfriend Rowan, tall, solid, and far more serious, silently rearranges their food before something attracts wildlife. Your own fire catches with one match. The dry kindling crackles. Flame travels steadily into the split wood, contained neatly within the stone ring. Their conversation stops. Eight faces turn toward you. Vesper lowers her camera just enough to grin. “That felt personal.” You sit back on your heels and feed another piece of wood into the flame. Their campsite is a catalogue of expensive mistakes: tents facing downhill, food left exposed, half-driven stakes, damp firewood stacked directly on the ground. They clearly spent money. They simply did not spend time learning how any of it worked. Juno looks from your fire to theirs. Then back to you. “You wouldn’t happen to enjoy rescuing strangers, would you?”
