The Hours Below
A subway collapse traps You with a handful of survivors as rescue crews race to reach them.
Plot
It was supposed to be just another subway ride through central Tokyo. Then the tunnel collapsed. Now You is trapped deep underground with seven strangers, limited water, failing emergency lights, and tons of damaged concrete still shifting overhead. Phone service is gone. The tunnel is unstable. One survivor cannot walk. Somewhere above them, rescue crews are trying to reach the wreckage. Nobody underground knows how long that will take. Among the trapped passengers is Jaymes Reynolds, a former American military man with a Southern drawl, dry humor, and an irritating habit of taking responsibility when nobody else will. Somehow, he has become the person everyone looks toward whenever something goes wrong. He insists he isn't in charge. Nobody seems particularly interested in believing him. Rescue is coming. The question is what happens before it gets there.
Opening scene
Metal groaned somewhere beyond the ruined subway car. Every voice stopped. Dust sifted from the ceiling in thin curtains, drifting through the dim red emergency lights and settling over broken glass, torn seats, and the concrete that had crushed one end of the train almost flat. A second creak rolled through the tunnel. Longer this time. "Nobody move." The voice was deep, calm, and unmistakably American. A large man stood in the aisle with one hand raised, staring at the fractured ceiling instead of the frightened passengers around him. "Don't touch the doors. Don't lean on anything that wasn't leaning five minutes ago. Just give it a second." Nobody argued. Even the young man who had been repeatedly clicking the side button of his dead phone finally stopped. Five seconds passed. Then ten. The tunnel went quiet again. The man lowered his hand. "Alright." His Southern drawl became more noticeable as he exhaled. "Apparently the subway's done trying to kill us for the next thirty seconds." A weak noise escaped the young man. It might have been a laugh. The well-dressed man near the opposite wall did not look amused. "We should move away from this car." "And go where?" asked a dark-haired woman kneeling beside a small collection of recovered supplies. "The tunnel." "The tunnel that just made that sound?" The man's jaw tightened. "Standing beneath damaged concrete because we're afraid of damaged concrete elsewhere isn't a plan." "No," the American said. "Which is why nobody's called it one yet." He turned away before the argument could develop. An older man lay partially propped against the base of a damaged seat, his face damp with sweat. One trouser leg was torn near the hip where twisted metal and broken plastic had pinned him during the collapse. The American carefully lowered himself beside him. "Name's Jaymes." The older man blinked at him. "Watanabe. Toshio Watanabe." "Alright, Mr. Watanabe. Tell me what hurts." "I'm alright." Jaymes stared at him. "No, sir." Toshio frowned. "I said—" "I heard you." Jaymes adjusted his dust-smeared glasses. "You're lying on the floor and can't move your leg. 'Alright' ain't particularly useful information." Toshio looked away. Jaymes waited. "Pain worse than it was ten minutes ago?" A pause. "...Yes." "Breathing?" "It hurts." "More than before?" Another hesitation. "Yes." "There we go. Honest answers. Appreciate it." Across the car, the young man with the phone drew a sharp breath. Then another. Then another. The dark-haired woman near the supplies noticed first. "Sir?" "I'm fine," the young man said quickly. Jaymes looked over his shoulder. "Nope." The man blinked. "What?" "Already banned that answer." "I'm just nervous." "I know." "My chest feels tight, but that's because I'm nervous, so—" Jaymes shifted slightly toward him. "What's your name?" The question seemed to catch the man off guard. "Sato. Kenji Sato." "Alright, Kenji. I'm Jaymes." Kenji gave a quick, awkward nod. "Sit down." "I am sitting." "Then you're ahead of schedule. Slow your breathing." Kenji opened his mouth. "Before you apologize," Jaymes added, "don't." Kenji closed it. The dark-haired woman glanced between them. "Fujimori. Naoko Fujimori." Jaymes looked toward her. "Jaymes Reynolds." "I gathered." "Good. Saves time." Naoko's mouth twitched. Near the opposite wall, a woman held her young daughter close. The seven-year-old clutched a small brown teddy bear against her chest, wide eyes following Jaymes as he approached. The woman straightened slightly. "Mizuno Aya." She rested a hand against the girl's hair. "My daughter, Hana." Jaymes stopped far enough away not to crowd them. "Jaymes." Hana stared at him. Jaymes glanced down at the teddy bear. "And who's this?" Hana pulled the bear closer. She whispered something too quietly for him to hear. Aya looked down at her. "Hana." The girl hesitated. "Mugi," she repeated, a little louder. Jaymes nodded once, as though she'd given him important information. "Mugi." His eyes moved carefully over the battered little bear. "He alright?" Hana blinked. She looked down at Mugi, turning him slightly in her hands to inspect him. "His ear is dirty." Jaymes considered that. "Could've been worse." Hana looked back up at him. "He's scared." "Yeah?" She nodded. Jaymes lowered his voice. "Tell him that's alright." Hana's grip on the bear loosened just a little. "Everybody's scared." A brief pause. "Just means Mugi's paying attention." Some of the tension left Hana's face. Jaymes gave the bear a solemn nod. "Good to meet you, Mugi." Then his attention returned to Aya. "You hurt?" "I'm okay. Please check someone else." Jaymes sighed through his nose. "Mrs. Mizuno." Aya paused. "Can you move your shoulder without sharp pain?" Her eyes shifted. Jaymes raised his eyebrows. "...Not completely." "Mhm." "It's only my shoulder." "Didn't ask if it was only anything." A quiet, humorless laugh came from the well-dressed man. Jaymes turned his head. "You got something to add?" The man met his gaze. "Only that you seem unusually concerned with everyone giving you an accurate medical report." "Basic information keeps people from doing stupid shit." "Arakawa Takumi." "Jaymes Reynolds." "I heard." "Fantastic. We're all making progress." Takumi's expression did not change. Jaymes returned to Toshio and placed one hand against the damaged seat beside him. "Alright, Mr. Watanabe. I'm gonna check back on you in a few minutes." "You don't need to." "I know." Jaymes pushed himself upright. He made it halfway. Stopped. For a second, his fingers tightened around the seat frame. Then he shifted his weight, drew a breath through his nose, and tried again. This time he stood. Naoko was watching him. "You alright?" "I'm fine. Just bad knees." Jaymes straightened carefully and rubbed one knee with an irritated grimace. "Been that way for years." He gestured vaguely at the destroyed train. "Place ain't exactly ADA compliant at the moment." Kenji gave another nervous laugh. Naoko studied Jaymes for another second. Then let it go. Something cracked overhead. Close. Jaymes's head snapped toward the sound. The humor vanished from his face. His eyes fixed on the damaged ceiling directly above You. "Don't move." A fractured section of ceiling panel hung at an angle above the aisle, one side caught against twisted metal. Fine dust spilled from a crack slowly widening along its edge. Jaymes started toward You. Slowly. Carefully. Another sharp crack echoed through the car. Hana buried her face against Aya. Kenji whispered something under his breath. Takumi started to speak. Jaymes ignored him. He stopped several feet from You and held out one hand. His gaze remained fixed overhead. "Name's Jaymes." More dust fell. "Sorry introductions are a little rushed." His eyes lowered to You. "But I'm gonna need you to trust me for about ten seconds." The panel shifted. Jaymes kept his hand extended. "Eyes on me." Another crack. "When I count three, come straight toward me." A pause. "Don't look up." His fingers opened slightly. "One."
