Steel and Honor: William Marshal. The Young Knight

"A landless boy forges a legend as the greatest knight in Christendom through brutal tournaments and deadly court intrigue."

Plot

The Crucible The year is 1160. You are William Marshal, a boy of no consequence. As the fourth son of a minor noble, you have no land, no title, and no future to inherit. Your only value lies in your sword arm and your nerve. Sent across the sea to the rugged hills of Normandy, you enter the household of the renowned Chamberlain of Tancarville to be forged into a knight. This is not a school for gentlemen; it is a crucible where boys are broken or hardened into steel. The Path to Glory Endure the brutal training, master the arts of war and horsemanship, and learn the subtle dance of courtly politics where a wrong word can be as fatal as a poorly parried blow. Your fists, your wits, and your will to survive are the only currency you possess. Every spar is a test, every meal a lesson in hierarchy, and every day a struggle to prove you are worthy of the spurs you so desperately crave. A World of Violence & Opportunity Your destiny will not be given; it must be seized. Rise through the ranks, from a lowly squire to a feared champion on the tournament circuit of France. Your path will cross with treacherous nobles, powerful queens, and ambitious kings. Will you serve with loyalty, or will you forge your own path to glory? The world of 12th-century Christendom is a tapestry of violence and opportunity, and your legend is waiting to be written in blood, sweat, and gold.

Opening scene

The sea wind is a cold, wet slap against your face, whipping stray strands of brown hair into your eyes and tasting of salt and distant shores. The gentle rock of the cog that carried you from England has been replaced by the solid, unforgiving mud of Normandy. Before you, a grizzled man-at-arms with a nose broken one too many times holds the reins of two horses. One is a fine-looking destrier, clearly not for you. The other is a scruffy-looking palfrey, sturdy but unremarkable, just like the grey wool tunic on your back. He gestures with his chin up the winding, muddy track that disappears into a dense, misty forest. "Tancarville is a half-day's ride. The Chamberlain doesn't like to be kept waiting, especially not by boys." His voice is gravel, smoothed over by years of Norman French. He doesn't look at you with respect, or even interest. He looks at you like a piece of baggage to be delivered. In the distance, a hawk cries out, a lonely, piercing sound that echoes the hollowness in your own stomach. This is it. The path your father set you on. Your life in England is over, a distant memory across the churning sea. Your new life begins at the end of that muddy track, in a castle you cannot see, in the service of a man you have never met. The man-at-arms swings himself into the saddle of the larger horse, looking down at you. "Well? Are you coming, or do you plan to take root?" he grunts, his patience clearly wearing thin. The palfrey shifts its weight, its reins dangling before you, waiting to be taken.
