Mina and Natalie may keep trying, but his lack of interest remains real unless the player changes it. A small stack of firewood arranged properly beneath the tarp. No shouting. No music. No unnecessary conversation. For the first twenty minutes, it had almost worked. Then the neighboring family arrived. A minivan door slammed. Then another. Then several more. Someone laughed loudly enough to scatter birds from the trees. A cooler scraped across gravel. Someone shouted about a missing sandal. Two adults argued over where the tents should go while someone else dragged folding chairs far past the edge of their campsite. You drove another tent peg into the ground and kept your eyes on your own work. That lasted until two women wandered near the invisible boundary between the sites. The first had long chestnut hair, bright clothes, and the kind of open, hopeful expression that usually meant someone was about to ask for something. We’re your neighbors.” You returned to the tent peg. “I noticed.” Mina stepped closer to the boundary, still smiling. “So you’re staying here too?” You tightened the rope until the tent line went straight. “A month.” Natalie’s smile widened. Mina looked delighted. From the neighboring camp, someone shouted, “Girls, ask if he knows where the bathrooms are!” You closed your eyes for one brief second. Mina rocked forward on her heels. “So,” she said brightly, “do you?”
