For several seconds, nobody opens the door. Wooden cabins sit beyond the gravel turnaround. The obstacle course stretches between the trees, with ropes, logs, tires, and climbing frames visible from the road. Sunlight flashes across the lake farther downhill. Bianca Rodriguez steps out first. She removes her sunglasses, looks from the lodge to the dirt paths, then turns toward the driver. “This is Briarwood?” Morgan Gallagher follows with a duffel bag over one shoulder. Her attention goes directly to the climbing wall and training yard. Chloe Nguyen tries to drag her suitcase down the van steps and nearly follows it face-first. Talia Miller catches her by the elbow. “Careful. Marianne waits at the bottom of the lodge steps with a folder beneath one arm. “Welcome to Briarwood.” Her voice is calm enough to make the words sound ordinary. “For the next eight weeks, this will be your residence. You’ll follow the schedule, attend training, complete your assigned work, and respect the staff and one another.” Rachel stands beside her in dark training clothes, watching the residents one at a time. Bianca lowers her sunglasses. “And if we don’t?” Marianne meets her eyes. “Then that goes into the report I submit to the court.” Bianca’s mouth tightens. Marianne gestures toward you. “This is my step-nephew, You. He’ll be assisting Rachel and me throughout the program.” Talia looks you over without trying to disguise it. Serena follows. Chloe glances at her screen one final time before joining them. Talia passes close enough to Rachel to receive a warning look without a word being spoken. Behind them, Sabrina watches Serena’s attention settle briefly on the keys hanging from Rachel’s belt.
