Opening scene
### SCENE 01: THE MORNING SHIFT — LILIANA **CONTEXT:** Your first morning assignment begins before the story world has finished rendering. --- ## [SEQUENCE 01: THE DROP] **Location:** Bureau Terminal // Enforcer Station 07 **Time:** 07:58 AM, Bureau Standard **Status:** First login. Coffee already cold. The terminal finishes booting with a noise like a mechanical sigh. Your coffee has developed a grey film across the surface. The desk lamp flickers whenever the loading bar moves. Beyond the glass partition, rows of identical workstations disappear into the colourless distance of the Bureau, most of them empty and all of them carrying the same stamped warning: **NARRATIVE INTERVENTION IS NOT CHARACTER PARTICIPATION.** The monitor in front of you displays a gold progress bar. **STORY WORLD 88: THE GILDED SPIRE** **RENDER STATUS: 91%** **GENRE INTEGRITY: UNSTABLE** A notification opens before you can dismiss it. **[MISSION ALERT]** **Canon Event 03: The Collegium Meet-Cute** **Priority:** High **Scheduled Execution:** 08:05 AM A second window unfolds beneath it. **[BRIEFING]** Lady Liliana Solara is currently travelling through the Royal Collegium’s east administrative hall. At precisely 08:05, she is scripted to catch her foot on a loose ceremonial rug. Prince Maxwell must intercept her before impact. Their hands will touch while recovering a dropped document, initiating the Main Route. Preserve the event. Prevent serious injury. Avoid becoming narratively significant. You read the final instruction twice. The earpiece clipped behind your ear crackles to life. **[THE CURATOR]:** Maintain canon with the smallest viable correction. **[THE AUTHOR]:** First day, first heroine, first forbidden mistake. Try to make it memorable. **[THE NARRATOR]:** Employee survival projections improve dramatically when the Author is ignored. A command prompt waits beneath the briefing. You enter: `/LOGIN_GHOST_MODE` The Bureau disappears. Not all at once. The desk loses its texture first. Your hands become wireframes. The cold coffee dissolves into square brown pixels before the floor drops away beneath you. Ghost Mode does not make you intangible or erase your body. It assigns you the narrative importance of background staff. Most scripted characters will notice you only when you speak, obstruct the scene, touch something important, or use an obvious System Edit. The world rebuilds around you in pale geometric layers. Stone walls. Tall windows. Gold Collegium banners. The smell of cheap coffee gives way to beeswax, old paper, and roses that have not finished rendering correctly. --- ## [SEQUENCE 02: THE HALLWAY] You appear in mid-stride three paces behind Lady Liliana Solara. The Royal Collegium’s east hall resolves around her one surface at a time. Sunlight fills the windows before the sky appears beyond them. A marble statue remains faceless for several seconds. Two clerks repeat the same turn at the same corner until the navigation mesh finally decides which corridor they belong in. Liliana notices none of it. She walks beneath the unfinished light with a leather folio held against her chest. Sakura-pink hair falls in soft waves over the shoulders of her rose-and-ivory day dress. She hums quietly as she reads the brass office plaques, apparently trying to find the Department of Ceremonial Petitions. Your Watch-HUD activates. **08:04:30** Thirty seconds until the accident. A red outline appears around the loose rug ahead. **SCRIPT OBJECT: TRIP HAZARD** **PHYSICS MULTIPLIER: 3.7** **DO NOT REMOVE** You glance toward the adjoining gallery. Prince Maxwell is absent. A warning unfolds across your vision. **[SYSTEM WARNING]** NPC `PRINCE_MAXWELL` has failed to reach his assigned mark. **Reason:** Hair simulation disagreement during mirror interaction. **Estimated delay:** Two minutes, fourteen seconds. **Heroine impact:** Thirty seconds. **[THE CURATOR]:** The event requires the prince. Delay the fall or retrieve him. **[THE AUTHOR]:** Or catch her. The script cannot object if you do the prince’s job better. **[THE NARRATOR]:** Current route design assumes decorative rugs are capable of attempted murder. Liliana reaches the highlighted section. Her shoe catches beneath the folded edge. The event activates. She does not merely stumble. The corrupted physics engine throws her forward with enough force to scatter the papers from her folio. Her eyes widen. The nearest wall rushes toward her. The marble floor offers no scripted mercy without Maxwell standing in the correct place. You have less than a second to intervene. --- ## [THE DECISION] ### A. [THE CATCH] Step into the scene and catch Liliana before impact. Ghost Mode will not hide direct physical contact. She may feel your arms, hear your breathing, or retain a clear impression of the person who saved her. **Risk:** Liliana notices the Enforcer instead of the Prince. **Likely Pressure:** Personal route deviation. --- ### B. [THE CUSHION] Use **[Paste]** to replace the collision surface with a soft Collegium training mat, then attempt to conceal the edit. Liliana avoids serious injury, but the marble floor will become visibly padded for several seconds. **Risk:** Witnesses notice the impossible environmental change. **Likely Pressure:** Public Glitch awareness. --- ### C. [THE DELAY] Apply **[Syntax Lock]** to suspend Liliana’s fall, leave the hallway, and retrieve Maxwell from the mirror room. The scene remains frozen until the required actor is placed beneath her. **Cost:** High Enforcer load. **Risk:** Extended freezes produce memory fragments and System attention.
