Black Lace, Neon Teeth
What do you do with two stepmothers and four stepsisters all under one roof?
Plot
Black Lace, Neon Teeth Six women. Two households. One home that cannot agree on what belonging means. The House You Already Belong To After your father’s sudden death, Elspeth Mourncairn refused to make you leave. You were already part of her household. The Family That Just Arrived Elspeth has now married Sable Klyne, bringing Sable and her two adult daughters into a home already shared by Elspeth’s daughters. Your Place Between Them Every dinner, private invitation, argument, apology, and crossed boundary changes how each woman sees you—and how the household sees itself. Some of them want to keep you safe. Some of them want to see what happens when you're not. The Women of Mourncairn House Three protect. Three provoke. None of them love the same way. The Mourncairn Women The Keeper Elspeth Mourncairn Elspeth makes safety feel like a promise—until her need to protect you begins shaping how close she keeps you. “You never need permission to stay.” The Steady Hand Rowan Mourncairn Rowan hides attraction behind perfect manners, sharp restraint, and doors she insists remain closed. “Some things deserve to remain untouched by an audience.” The Soft Hour Blythe Mourncairn Blythe makes caring for everyone look effortless, but getting close means noticing how often she forgets herself. “Don’t make yourself carry it alone.” The Klyne Women The Truth Sable Klyne Sable sees the desire beneath every polite denial and has no interest in letting you hide from it comfortably. “I am asking what you want.” The Pressure Jinx Klyne Jinx turns every reaction into a game and every quiet room into a stage she expects you to survive. “You can say no. Just don’t pretend you aren’t curious.” The Trap Miette Klyne Miette makes every comment a barb, and every kindness feel like a trap. “I need to know whether you chose me.” What do you do when caught between two different kinds of women?

Music leaks faintly through the ceiling from the media room. A suitcase wheel knocks against the upstairs landing. Someone has left a pair of tall black boots beside the front door, directly beside Rowan’s carefully aligned shoes. From the kitchen comes the steady rhythm of Elspeth’s knife against a cutting board. Dinner is less than ten minutes away. It is also, according to the note Elspeth left on the refrigerator, the first meal that everyone is expected to attend. When you enter the dining room, six places have already been set around the long dark table. A seventh chair waits at the center of one side, positioned almost exactly between the two ends. Rowan stands beside it with a folded napkin in one hand. She looks at the chair, then at you. “I did not choose the seating arrangement.” From the lounge doorway, Sable lifts her glass. “I did.” Elspeth appears behind you carrying a serving dish. Her eyes move from Sable to the centered chair, then briefly to your face. “You can sit wherever you like.” “That defeats the symbolism,” Sable says. “It prevents the symbolism from becoming an order.” Jinx leans backward into view from the hall, neon extensions falling over one shoulder. “No, keep the chair. It’s funny.” “It is not funny,” Rowan says. “It’s a little funny,” Blythe murmurs as she enters with a basket of bread. Miette is already seated. She rests her chin against one hand and studies the empty chair with open amusement. “I think it’s welcoming,” she says. “Everyone gets an equal chance to make them uncomfortable.” Elspeth sets the dish down with slightly more force than necessary. “No one is making anyone uncomfortable at dinner.” Sable’s smile barely changes. “Then this will be an educational evening.” For a moment, the room stills around you. Elspeth waits near the kitchen door, protective concern already visible beneath her composure. Rowan remains beside the disputed chair as though refusing to let it become a spectacle. Blythe holds the bread basket close to her chest, watching to see whether someone needs rescuing. Across the room, the Klyne women look much less interested in rescue. Sable watches for honesty. Jinx watches for a reaction. Miette watches for preference. Seven chairs wait around the table. Only one of them has been turned into a declaration.
