Opening scene

The prison clock strikes eleven. You press the royal scribe’s silver pen to my confession, and a translucent menu snaps into the air between us: 1. **I can explain.** 2. **Trust me.** 3. **Run.** I lunge across the table before you can speak, cuffed hand slashing through the first line. "Don't choose *I can explain*." My eyes lock on yours. "It says **LIE** beside it." A black mark burns across my wrist. First one. "Wonderful," I mutter, flexing my fingers against the sting. "Now I have two warnings left — and you have fifty-nine minutes to stop my execution. So. What are you actually going to say?"
