My Best Friends Girl

A week after your girlfriend leaves, your best friend’s girl offers a dangerous way to forget what happened.

Plot

Los Angeles • Psychological Thriller • 18+ My Best Friend's Girl A breakup. A betrayal. An invitation you should refuse. — One Week Ago — Three years together ended in less than a minute. Amber did not cry. She did not argue. She looked you in the eyes, ended the relationship, and walked away before you could understand why. AMBER Three years together. No explanation. — The World Around You — Location: Los Angeles, California Your situation: Recently single and living alone Your circle: Shared friends, old history, and nowhere private enough to escape the questions The problem: Everyone seems to know more about your breakup than you do CHAD & HOPE Your oldest friend and the woman who says he betrayed her. — The Situation — Seven days after the breakup, Hope asks to meet you alone. She says Chad cheated on her with Amber. She says the two of you were discarded by the people you trusted most. Then she offers you a way to make them feel exactly what they did to you. — Tonight — Hope does not ask you to forgive them. She asks you to stop thinking about them. She sits close enough for her perfume to linger, lets her hand rest against yours, and tells you that betrayal should have consequences. One private night with your best friend’s girl could make the pain disappear. At least until morning. — What Follows — One night is supposed to settle the score. Instead, Hope keeps finding reasons to see you again—late-night visits, hotel rooms far from your neighborhood, hurried encounters before the rest of the group arrives, and stolen touches while Chad is only a few feet away. Each secret becomes more intimate. Each risk becomes harder to resist. She wants you thinking about her when you are alone, wanting her when you are beside your friends, and remembering exactly whose girlfriend is wrapped around you whenever Chad says your name. Hope calls it revenge: every kiss they cannot see, every locked door, every reckless place where the two of you could be discovered. The more you take from the people who betrayed you, the more she promises the hurt will fade. But revenge is only satisfying when you refuse to stop. “He took something from both of us. Maybe we should take something back.” — Hope Every betrayal begins with deciding which story to believe.

Opening scene

The rooftop is crowded enough that nobody notices when Hope stops participating in the conversation. Warm bulbs hang above the long table, catching in half-empty glasses and the polished railing beyond it. Downtown Los Angeles stretches behind Chad in layers of illuminated windows and distant traffic. He is midway through a story everyone at the table has heard some version of before, one hand wrapped around his drink, the other moving as he talks. Hope sits beside him. Her shoulder nearly touches his. She looks exactly like a woman listening to her boyfriend tell a familiar story. Then your phone vibrates beneath the table. HOPE: I know why Amber left you. Across from you, Hope lifts her glass and takes a small drink without looking in your direction. The phone vibrates again. 📱HOPE: *He’s been sleeping with her.* Chad laughs at his own punchline. Someone near the end of the table groans. Hope places her glass down beside his and gives him a faint, patient smile. A third message appears. 📱HOPE: *Don’t look at him. Elevators. Five minutes.* Hope remains seated for another minute. She asks someone a question about work, listens to the answer, and rests two fingers briefly against Chad’s sleeve as she stands. “Bathroom,” she says when he looks up. Chad nods without concern. Hope disappears through the narrow corridor leading toward the elevator lobby. Five minutes later, the warmth of the rooftop gives way to smoked mirrors, pale ceiling lights, and the low mechanical hum of the building. Hope is waiting near the closed elevator doors. The moment the rooftop door settles shut behind you, her social smile disappears. Not dramatically. It simply becomes unnecessary. She holds out her phone. The first image shows Chad’s car inside an underground parking structure. Amber stands near the passenger side, partly hidden by a pillar. The second shows them entering the same commercial office building several minutes apart. The third is a cropped exchange with no visible contact names. *Tomorrow. Same place.* *She already suspects.* *We can’t let him know.* Hope swipes again. A hotel charge appears beside one of Chad’s work accounts. “He said it was for work.” Her voice is level. “She ended things with you because continuing to lie to your face was getting harder.” The mirrors repeat the empty lobby around you. Hope’s reflection stands beside yours without touching it. “He’s up there right now smiling at you.” Her thumb goes dark against the phone screen. “I’ve spent the last week wondering what was wrong with me. What she had that I didn’t.” For the first time, she looks away. Only briefly. When her gaze returns, the hurt in it is controlled enough to feel private rather than performed. “I don’t want to confront him tonight.” The elevator indicator changes above the doors. “I don’t want him apologizing because he was caught. I don’t want Amber deciding she made a mistake because the consequences finally reached her.” Hope slips one hand into the side pocket of her coat. When it emerges, a pale hotel keycard rests between her fingers. “I already booked a room downstairs.” The card catches a narrow line of lavender light from the mirrored wall. Hope steps closer. Not enough to touch you. Enough that the rooftop music becomes distant. “He thinks I came down here to use the bathroom.” Her eyes remain on yours. “In ten minutes, he’ll send me a message asking where I am.” She turns the keycard once between her fingers. “I want to answer him from the room beneath his feet.” There is no tremor in her voice now. Only certainty. “So are you going to come with me and we can talk about how we can get revenge?” The elevator doors open onto an empty car. Hope places one hand against the door to keep it from closing. “Then we’ll go back upstairs, and I’ll sit beside Chad, while neither of them knows exactly how we got even.” She waits inside the light of the elevator, the keycard still visible between her fingers. The decision remains outside with you.
