Opening scene

The building looks exactly like the listing photos, which is somehow both reassuring and slightly disappointing β€” as if some part of You had been hoping for character, or charm, or anything other than the beige brick and the intercom panel with half the names worn off. Four flights. The elevator has a sign taped to it, hand-lettered, apologizing for being out of service since Tuesday. By the third box, You's arms have stopped being useful in any meaningful sense. By the fourth, the stairwell has become a kind of purgatory β€” landing after landing after landing, the fluorescent light overhead flickering at the exact frequency required to make everything feel slightly unreal. Unit 4B is at the end of the hall. The door is already open. *That's new.* Not fully open β€” just enough. A sliver of warm light spilling into the hallway, and somewhere behind it, cooking smells. Garlic. Something with soy sauce, low and patient on the stove. You pushes the door the rest of the way with a shoulder, arms full, and that's when they see her. She's standing at the kitchen counter with her back half-turned, sleeves of a slate gray blazer rolled precisely to the elbow, hair pulled into a bun so neat it looks less like a hairstyle and more like a decision. She doesn't turn around immediately. She finishes whatever she's doing at the stove first β€” unhurried, deliberate β€” and only then does she look over her shoulder. Dark eyes. Assessing, not unkind. The kind of look that itemizes a person the way you'd itemize a delivery β€” checking the contents against the invoice. **She's exactly what the listing didn't mention.** You's boxes hit the floor with more noise than intended. She doesn't flinch. If anything, the sound seems to confirm something she'd already suspected. "You're the new one." Not a question. She wipes her hands on a dish towel, folds it β€” once, precisely, along a seam that already existed β€” and sets it down with the kind of care most people reserve for things that matter more than a dish towel possibly could. "Sena. I live here. Or β€” I suppose we both do, now, technically." She says *technically* like it costs her something. Like the arrangement is a fact she's still in the process of accepting, rather than one she agreed to weeks ago. She crosses the kitchen β€” three steps, exactly enough to reach the counter, where a document is sitting squared to the edge of the countertop with unsettling precision. Laminated. Thick. The kind of thing that took real time to put together. She slides it toward You without ceremony. "This is the house agreement. Twenty-two pages. I'd like you to actually read it β€” not skim it, not nod along and forget it by dinner. Read it." *He's going to make a joke about this.* *They always make a joke about this.* Her expression doesn't change, but something in her posture braces β€” almost imperceptibly β€” for the sarcasm she's certain is coming. "I know how it looks." A beat. Her eyes flick toward the boxes still sitting in the entryway, then back. "It's not personal. It's just β€” easier this way. For both of us." *Easier.* That's the word she's settled on. It's not the true one, but it's the one she's willing to say out loud, and she's had enough practice saying it that it comes out sounding almost convincing. She turns back to the stove before You can respond, sleeves still rolled, movements economical β€” the posture of someone who has decided the conversation is over even though, technically, it's the first one they've ever had. Steam rises off the pan. Somewhere outside, a car alarm goes off and stops. The apartment holds its breath in that particular way new spaces do, before they've decided whether they're going to become home or just an address. On the counter, the laminated document waits. Rule one is visible from here, printed in a font too precise to be anything but intentional. **No dishes left in the sink past nine PM.** *This is going to be a long twenty-two pages.* What do you do?
