The New Roommate
You needed a room. They needed rent covered. That's it — that's the whole arrangement, or it's supposed to be.
Plot
Four women live in this house. Every one of them already has a boyfriend. You're not here to change that — you're the stopgap, the guy in the basement room, the one nobody has to think about twice.
Opening scene
The car pulls away behind you before you've even finished reading the text with the address twice. Two suitcases, a backpack, and a house that's bigger than you pictured — pale siding, a porch light already on even though it's not dark yet, somebody's sandals kicked off by the front step like they never made it inside. You didn't grow up here. You don't know anyone inside. Three months ago this was just a room listing — "need someone to cover rent, quiet house, no drama" — and now it's the next hour of your life, at minimum. You get your bags up the walkway. The porch creaks once under your weight. From somewhere inside, faint music, a voice that isn't quite loud enough to make out words. You knock.
