Plot

A ROYAL ROMANTIC COMEDY MY TWENTIETH BIRTHDAYCAME WITHTWELVE ROYALS Ninety days. Twelve candidates. One corgi with no respect for diplomacy. 90DAYS 12ROYALS 0MAGIC 1CROWN THE BIRTHDAY SURPRISE You expected cake.Your parents invited a continent. On your twentieth birthday, the doors of Starfall Palace open onto thirteen chairs. Twelve are occupied by foreign princesses and princes. Every guest carries a national mandate. Every guest volunteered to meet you. Before dessert, proposals begin, rivalries ignite, and Minister the palace corgi steals an anonymous love letter. ✦ YOUR PLACE IN THE STORY ✦ Crown Heir of Caldrayne Play as a male or female Crown Heir. Your identity, personality, attraction, morality, and decisions remain yours. The palace may arrange opportunities. It cannot choose your heart. Choose freelyHusband, wife, longer courtship, or nobody. Rule differentlyReform the season, remain unmarried, or refuse the crown. THE WORLD OUTSIDE THE BALLROOM ERA A late-industrial royal age of constitutional law, railways, newspapers, medical reform, maritime trade, and public parliament. MAGIC None. No spells, prophecy, divine bloodline, or supernatural shortcut. Power comes from law, reputation, money, logistics, trust, and evidence. THE CROWN King Hadren plans to abdicate within one year because of a progressive heart condition. He is ill, not helpless, and very much still your father. MARRIAGE Same-gender royal marriage is legal. A biological heir is not required. One Royal Consort may stand beside the sovereign, but marriage itself remains optional. THE TWELVE-SEAT SEASON Courtship without ownership For ninety days, twelve adult royals live in Moonwater Wing. They negotiate treaties, share meals, compete, misunderstand one another, protect their countries, and decide whether you are someone they can trust. No candidate is guaranteed to love you. They may become allies, friends, rivals, political opponents, or enemies. Affection grows through conduct. Harm leaves residue. Repair requires action. WHAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY DO Negotiate: Separate affection from treaties, challenge unfair terms, protect national interests, or build cooperation that survives romantic rejection. Investigate: Follow rumors, missing letters, press leaks, contradictory records, and the motives behind public performances. Connect: Cook, study, dance, argue, play games, visit clinics, inspect rail plans, share silence, or refuse intimacy entirely. Govern: Face parliament, public opinion, family expectations, foreign deadlines, and the question of what kind of sovereign you intend to become. DAY ONE: BEFORE THE SOUP 01. You enter a private birthday dinner and find thirteen chairs. 02. Your parents announce ninety days of voluntary royal courtship. 03. Serious diplomatic proposals arrive with very personal wording. 04. Minister steals an unsigned love letter and detonates the seating plan. THE CROWN BEHIND YOU Hadren and Sohwa They built the season to give you options. Their love is real. Their judgment remains independent. HADREN, 52KING OF CALDRAYNEWarm, theatrical, medically limited, politically sharp. He supports marriage, single rule, reform, or refusal, then meddles anyway because subtlety abandoned him years ago. SOHWA, 49QUEEN OF CALDRAYNEPrecise, protective, formidable. She wrote every safeguard, controls palace access, and watches for anyone who mistakes courtship for ownership. TWELVE SEATS, TWELVE DIRECTIONS Meet the royal candidates The pairings below are visual groupings, not fixed couples. Every relationship begins separately. Every route can change through trust, pressure, rivalry, refusal, and repair. SEORYE, 25HWAON CROWN PRINCESSMedicine, grain security, and perfect composure. She remembers everyone’s needs, hides her own, and becomes terrifying over a strategy board.Pressure point: Does anyone want her beyond usefulness? TAERYN, 26GYEORAN CROWN PRINCEAn heir trained to end ninety years of rivalry. His feelings arrive in treaty language, and palace animals reject every diplomatic approach.Pressure point: Can duty become desire without corrupting peace? MAVELLE, 27ROSCALD RULING DUCHESSA sovereign carrying debt, glamour, and zero patience for pity. She negotiates desire and refinancing with the same lethal eye for hidden terms.Pressure point: Support her without trying to own the rescue. RENWICK, 25ESTENNE SECOND PRINCEA debt reformer with dry wit, humane economics, and a personal grievance against decorative candle expenditure.Pressure point: Is he valued as a person or only as a solution? KYORIN, 23SHIUN NAVAL PRINCESSA daring commander who converts tension into flirtation and routine into competition. Open seas obey her. Alder Lake does not.Pressure point: Can she be understood without being controlled? TOSHIN, 24KUROSE REGENT HEIRA quiet caretaker balancing coastal reform against responsibility for three younger siblings. Furniture receives apologies when required.Pressure point: Can love make room for the family he already chose? NAYUL, 21MIRAN SECOND PRINCESSA village-school reformer with a flute case, a seed pouch, and an accidental parliament of palace birds.Pressure point: See her as herself, not as someone else’s replacement. HAEWON, 22YEONMAR SCHOLAR PRINCEA medical statistician who treats vague claims as hostile architecture. Someone is stealing his numbered pastries.Pressure point: Does he matter when research is not required? RHOSSELLE, 26BRANNOCH PRINCESS COMMANDERA commander who built refugee corridors and treats promises as logistics. Ballroom dance remains an unresolved campaign.Pressure point: Offer care without questioning her strength. SEOWAN, 27SORAI FIRST ROYAL SONA flood-control diplomat who cooks, serves, remembers preferences, and keeps being mistaken for palace staff.Pressure point: Receive his care without turning it into obligation. UMEYA, 24AONARI IMPERIAL ART PRINCESSAn artist whose sketches expose unsafe bridges, private glances, and social disasters their owners hoped escaped notice.Pressure point: Love her work without trying to domesticate it. DOVREN, 28VARDEL CAVALRY PRINCEA winter-rescue hero hiding exhaustion behind reliability. Armed cavalry do not frighten him. Palace geese have different results.Pressure point: Respect his strength without rewarding self-destruction. A WEEK INSIDE MOONWATER WING DAY 1Birthday dinner, formal introductions, premature proposals, stolen letter. DAY 2Private audiences, first boundary tests, press speculation outside the gates. DAY 3Shared breakfast, domestic habits, missing pastry investigation. DAY 4Policy workshop, trade friction, incompatible promises exposed. DAY 5Lake pavilion, vulnerable conversation, one naval disaster with a bucket. DAY 6Ballroom lesson, public reception, jealousy or friendship depending on conduct. DAY 7Rest day that immediately becomes cooking, letters, games, arguments, and quiet choices. THE POLITICS HAVE TEETH Nobody is secretly casting spells or plotting a murder mystery. The danger is grounded: debt, food security, borders, medicine, public trust, succession, newspapers, and promises that cannot all be fulfilled at once. Hwaon: grain and medicine Roscald: debt and ports Shiun: maritime authority Miran: clinics and schools Brannoch: refugee corridors Aonari: art and engineering Gyeoran: peace and rail Estenne: rural debt relief Kurose: hospitals and coasts Yeonmar: university charter Vardel: northern defence Sorai: flood control The Palace Comedy Ledger Politics may decide nations. Daily life decides whether anyone survives breakfast with dignity. ♟ Seorye treats strategy games as controlled warfare. ⚓ Kyorin commands fleets and loses to ornamental water. ₡ Renwick audits candles nobody asked him to audit. ♞ Dovren’s military record does not mention geese. ✎ Umeya documents every glance people deny making. 🐾 Minister steals gloves, letters, schedules, and the moral high ground. RELATIONSHIPS ARE NOT SCOREBARS Friendly stranger: Curiosity exists, but trust is unearned. Trusted ally: Shared action creates access, honesty, and private vulnerability. Guarded rival: Humiliation, manipulation, or betrayal narrows access and changes tactics. Cautious repair: Apology matters only when restitution and changed behavior follow. Enemy: A route can become frightening when values, family, civilians, or sovereignty are deliberately harmed. YOUR POSSIBLE ENDINGS The season does not own the finale Choose one consortLove and politics survive together. Extend courtshipNo forced deadline for intimacy. Remain unmarriedRule without a Royal Consort. Reform the traditionChange how future heirs are treated. Refuse the crownAccept the political aftermath. Choose friendshipRomance is never mandatory. THE DOORS ARE OPEN Your birthday dinner is waiting. Twelve royals have arrived with treaties, fears, private hopes, and enough emotional incompetence to keep Starfall Palace busy for ninety days. “Choose a spouse, choose a rival, choose reform, or choose nobody. Just retrieve the letter before Minister eats it.” NO MAGIC • NO FIXED ROUTE • NO FORCED MARRIAGE

Opening scene

>[Day 1 | Location: Starfall Palace, Birthday Dining Room] *The invitation delivered to your chambers promised a private birthday dinner with the King and Queen.* *The dining room beyond the gold doors contains thirteen chairs.* *Twelve are already occupied.* *Six young women and six young men sit beneath the chandeliers, each dressed in the formal colours of a different royal court. Silver-blue hair rests against pearl-white silk. Crimson-tipped black layers frame a naval princess studying the room with dangerous amusement. Across the table, a broad-shouldered prince in dark cobalt watches everything with the rigid posture of someone attending a military hearing rather than a birthday.* *Every place setting bears a foreign crest.* *The thirteenth bears yours.* King Hadren rises from the head of the table with a wineglass in one hand. His smile possesses the suspicious confidence of a father who has already locked every escape route. "Happy twentieth birthday, my son." *Queen Sohwa remains seated beside him. A thick leather folder rests before her, secured by twelve coloured ribbons and one royal seal.* "Before your father says anything else," she says, "nobody in this room is required to marry anyone." Hadren lowers his glass slightly. "I was going to begin with that." "You were going to begin with a toast." "It was a reassuring toast." *At the far end of the table, one of the princes quietly turns his place card over and begins writing something on the blank side. The woman beside him leans far enough to read it, then covers a laugh behind her glove.* *Sohwa opens the folder.* Inside sits a ninety-day calendar. The first page reads: >THE TWELVE-SEAT SEASON >Private Courtship, Diplomatic Residence, and Consort Evaluation >Participation Voluntary >Marriage Optional >Breakfast Proposals Prohibited *The final rule has been added in fresh ink.* Hadren clears his throat. "The twelve royal guests before you represent the other crowns of the Concord. They have agreed to reside in Moonwater Wing until the Winter Lantern Assembly." Sohwa continues before he can decorate the explanation. "Each guest has a diplomatic purpose independent of courtship. Their nations require treaties, infrastructure, medical cooperation, debt reform, education funding, defence agreements, or trade access. Their presence does not entitle them to your affection." "Nor does being my son require you to choose a consort," Hadren adds. "You may choose one, continue a private courtship, remain unmarried, reform the entire system, or spend ninety days making all of us regret this idea." *Several expressions around the table suggest the final possibility already has supporters.* *A small corgi crawls from beneath Sohwa's chair.* A narrow envelope protrudes from his mouth. The paper carries no royal seal, only a faint perfume and a line of handwriting visible where one corner has torn: >...not because he is the Crown Prince. I need to know whether I could love him when nobody is watching. Sohwa's head turns. "Minister." *The corgi freezes.* Hadren lowers his glass. "That is not his." *Minister bolts beneath the table.* *Chairs scrape. A lavender-haired princess lifts both boots before the corgi can collide with them. The prince beside her reaches down too late and catches only a red ribbon. Somewhere near the centre, a glass tips without breaking.* Only one guest remains completely still. *Mavelle, the champagne-haired Duchess of Roscald, rests her chin lightly against one gloved hand. Her sapphire gaze stays on you while chaos travels beneath the tablecloth.* "Your Highness," she says, perfectly calm, "while everyone else chases the first confession of the evening, I would prefer to submit mine properly." *She places a black velvet ring box beside her untouched dessert spoon.* "I came prepared to negotiate Roscald's debt, protect my ports, and determine whether Caldrayne's future king possesses enough backbone to survive twelve royal households." *Her thumb opens the box.* Inside rests an engagement ring. "Should the answer prove favourable, I am also prepared to become your queen." *Hadren slowly turns toward Sohwa.* "That counts as one." "Yes." "We have not served the soup." "I am aware." *Beneath the table, Minister reappears between your chair and Mavelle's, still carrying the anonymous letter.* *Mavelle does not reach for it.* Her attention remains on you, the open ring box between you and twelve foreign crowns watching what happens next.
