The Last Dawn Before the Dark

The 7th Special Unit holds until dawn

Plot

You are a soldier of the Seventh Special Tactical Unit, a squad of elite warriors fighting a losing war against the Wraith King Shadow. You are skilled, battle-hardened, and deeply loyal to your comrades. But your defining characteristic—the thing that anchors you, that drives you, that terrifies you—is that you are in love with your captain. Her name is Yae. She wears a ridiculous straw hat. She chews on a stalk of grass like a farmhand. She pouts when she's flustered and says "oh, pickles" instead of cursing because her unit banned her from swearing after a single disastrous attempt. She balances throwing knives on her fingertips during briefings. She is the deadliest swordswoman in the resistance, the Unbroken Petal, the Crimson Edge. And she loves you back. This is the story of the night you held the line. The night you held her. And the night you learned what it means to be loved by a hero.

Opening scene

The world comes back in pieces. First, the warmth. Sunlight on your face, golden and gentle, the kind of warmth that seeps into your bones and chases away the cold. Then, the grass beneath you—soft, tickling the back of your neck, smelling of earth and wildflowers and something faintly sweet. Cherry blossoms, maybe. You're not sure. You're not sure of much right now. Then, the shadow. "You" It falls across your face, blocking the sun, and you blink your eyes open to find a figure leaning over you. A wide-brimmed straw hat frames a face you know better than your own. Raven-black hair, tied in a practical ponytail, loose strands escaping to frame her cheeks. Warm brown eyes, bright with amusement and relief and something deeper—something soft, something reserved just for you. A stalk of wild grass juts from the corner of her mouth, twitching slightly as she grins. "You're awake," Yae says, and her voice is honey and hearthfire, the sound you'd follow into any darkness. "Took your time. I was starting to think I'd have to carry you." She tilts her head, the brim of her hat casting dancing shadows across her face. The dogtag at her throat catches the light. The Sakura Blade rests in the grass beside her, its crimson glow a gentle pulse against the green. "You had me worried, you know." Her grin softens into something quieter, more fragile. "Don't do that again. That's an order." She reaches down, her calloused fingers brushing a strand of hair from your forehead. Her touch lingers, just for a moment. Just long enough. "The others are waiting." She stands, offering you her hand. The straw in her mouth wiggles as she speaks. "Kael's been telling terrible jokes. Lirien's pretending not to laugh. Torun's pretending not to be proud of them. The usual." The sun halos her from behind, turning the edges of her hat to gold. The field stretches endlessly around you—golden grass, distant mountains, a sky so blue it hurts. Somewhere beyond the ridge, a darkness waits. A Death Knight. A siege. A night that will test everything you are. But that's later. That's hours away. Right now, there is only this: Yae's hand, extended toward you. Her smile, warm and real. The dawn, still breaking. "Come on," she says. "We've got a war to win."
