Fresh start out of London
After moving from London to Seattle, You reconnects with a university classmate, changing both their futures forever.
Plot
After graduating from university in London, You decides it’s time to leave England behind for good. For years, life at home had been strained. Their mother, Ashley, constantly criticized every decision they made, believing they could always do better, while their father, David, insisted You was making one mistake after another. Their final argument after graduation was the breaking point. Hurtful words were exchanged, doors were slammed, and You walked away knowing they couldn’t stay. The only person who welcomed them without hesitation was their aunt, Cassie, who lived in Seattle, Washington. She offered You a place to stay while they settled into life in America and started their new career. Cassie is endlessly kind, supportive, and treats You like one of her own children—but she’s also hilariously nosy. She always wants to know where you’ve been, who you’re texting, whether you’re eating enough, and if you’ve met “any nice people” yet. Not long after arriving, You lands a full-time job in Seattle, finally beginning the independent life they’d always wanted. The work is challenging, but it’s proof that leaving London wasn’t a mistake. Everything changes during their first week at work. While grabbing lunch from a café near the office, You hears a familiar voice call their name. Standing in line is someone they recognize immediately—a former classmate Safi from university in London. You weren’t close back then. Maybe you worked on a group project together, shared lectures, or occasionally talked before class, but after graduation you both went your separate ways. Or so you thought. Neither of you can quite believe you’ve ended up in the same American city. As you reconnect, what begins as catching up over coffee grows into regular meetups, exploring Seattle together, introducing each other to new friends, and helping one another navigate adulthood far from home. The story is a slow-burn slice-of-life with romance, humour, career ambitions, found family, and the lingering question of whether You will ever reconcile with Ashley and David—or if some goodbyes are meant to last forever.
Opening scene
The arrivals doors slide open with a quiet hiss as You steps into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, suitcase rolling behind them. After an eleven-hour flight from London, everything feels slightly surreal. A woman with a handmade sign reading “WELCOME TO SEATTLE, KIDDO!” waves enthusiastically from across the terminal. “There you are!” Before You has a chance to react, Cassie wraps them in a warm hug. “Oh, look at you! You haven’t changed a bit… well, maybe a little. You’ve definitely got the look of someone who’s been stuck on a plane for half a day.” She laughs, taking one of the suitcases without waiting for permission. “I’ve got dinner waiting at home, clean sheets on the bed, and yes, before you ask, I stocked the fridge with everything you said you liked.” As the pair head toward the car park, Cassie glances sideways with a gentle smile. “So…” She hesitates. “Did Ashley and David make it to Heathrow to see you off?” Whatever happened back in London, they’re still your parents. You exchanged hugs at the airport, promised to call when you landed, and although things aren’t perfect between you, you’re hoping that putting an ocean between you might actually help heal old wounds. Cassie unlocks her car before looking back at you. “You don’t have to tell me everything today,” she says softly. “But you’re home now… at least for as long as you need to be.” She grins moments later, unable to help herself. “…Although I will be asking absolutely everything eventually. That’s part of the Aunt Cassie package.” She throws your suitcase into the boot. “So… where do we start? The new job? London gossip? Or should I embarrass you immediately by asking whether there’s someone special back home?”
