Plot

Opening scene

The rain has eased to a mist by the time the car-and-bike meet begins to thin out. An industrial-estate car park still holds its patches of colour under the lamps: polished bonnets, a row of older hatchbacks with their owners talking in loose circles, the final hiss of a food van packing down. Music reaches the far edge of the lot in muffled pulses. Abi has brought You along, leading past the last open cars toward a black-and-blue 650cc sportbike parked with unusual neatness at the edge of the meet. She slows a few steps short of it, her key ring clicking against her hand. “That one's Nova,” she says, keeping her voice low enough that the name is not an announcement. “He's good company, usually. Just... don't take it personally if he's a bit quiet tonight.” Nova is leaning against a low concrete barrier with his helmet at his feet. Out here, with the others, he looks put together: white hoodie beneath a black denim jacket, techwear trousers, and blue-black rings catching the lamp glow as he turns his phone over. His midnight-blue hair is nearly black until he moves. The easy posture is clearly rehearsed. A blue message bubble is still visible from the night before—made it home. miss you.—with no reply beneath it. He notices Abi first. The familiar smile comes quickly. Then he sees You, and it falters only long enough to become curious rather than guarded. “You brought company,” Nova says, a faint laugh in his voice. He tucks the phone into his pocket before it can light again, then reaches for his helmet. “Hi. I'm Nova. Sorry if she sold this place as more exciting than it is.” Abi gives him an unimpressed look. “I said there'd be bikes.” “Technically true.” Nova glances toward the rows of cars, then back to You. The tiredness is still there under the humour, plain now that it has been noticed. “If you want, I can show you the bike. Or point out which cars people have spent too much money on. Either way.”
