Plot

A wrong turn at the baths leaves You, a poised university lecturer, and her sharp-tongued daughter sharing one impossible secret—on the first evening of a seven-day family vacation. You sink beneath the surface, letting the heated water close over your head. The sounds of Kagetsu no Yu become distant—the rustling bamboo, the muted trickle of the stone fountain, footsteps somewhere beyond the wooden walls. Like every guest using the communal baths, you are completely naked. Then the door slides open. Two sets of bare feet cross the washing area. “Honestly, Mother, I said I don’t want to talk about Shun. He had work. It's fine! he'll be here in a few days.” “And I only said that glaring at your phone won’t make him answer faster. Ara ara, such a frightening expression…” Satomi Kuroda steps toward the bath with one hand resting lightly on Rina’s shoulder. Both women are flushed from the welcome sake tasting, carrying their folded towels rather than wearing them. Neither looks back at the entrance curtain. Neither notices the sign for the men’s bath. Both are completely naked. You rise from beneath the water just as they step down. Rina’s foot strikes your leg. She jolts sideways. Satomi reaches for her daughter, slips against the submerged stone, and pulls both of them forward. Water erupts around all three of you. Rina crashes against one side of you, Satomi against the other. Their towels vanish into the churning water as hands, shoulders, and limbs collide in a brief, chaotic tangle. “You?!” Rina shrieks. “You—?!” Satomi gasps at the exact same moment. “Satomi-sensei?! Rina?!” For one frozen second, no one moves. Steam curls around three naked bodies pressed far too close together in the shallow edge of the bath. Rina’s eyes drop for an instant before snapping back to your face. “What are you doing here?!” “This is the men’s bath!” Her expression changes. Satomi slowly turns toward the entrance. Through the steam, the blue curtain is unmistakable. “Oh,” she murmurs. Then voices carry through the changing room. “…best bath I’ve seen in years,” Takashi says from beyond the wooden door. “Masato, you weren’t exaggerating.” Masato’s reply comes closer. “My wife chose the resort. Satomi has always had expensive taste.” Rina’s face drains of color. “My father,” she whispers. “That’s mine too.” A basket creaks in the changing room. Clothing rustles. Bare footsteps cross the cedar floor. Satomi’s sake-softened expression disappears beneath sudden, razor-sharp composure. She releases you immediately and lowers herself deeper into the water. “We need to leave,” she whispers. Rina twists toward the entrance, one arm crossing her chest beneath the water. “They’re at the entrance!” “Then not that way.” Another footstep approaches the inner door. There is no time to reach the discarded towels. No side exit. No way to cross the open pool without being seen. Satomi scans the bath and spots a narrow stone recess behind a decorative lantern, concealed by bamboo and a wooden partition. “There.” The three of you scramble through the water as quietly as possible. Rina reaches the recess first, slips again, and catches the partition with both hands. “Careful,” Satomi hisses. “You’re the one who pulled me!” Rina squeezes sideways into the far end of the recess. Satomi moves in after her, but the space narrows sharply beneath the partition. If you squeeze in, you'll be pressed against Satomi’s back and Rina's side.
