🌿 O Lobo de Boa Esperança

A dead father. An unwanted fiancé. And an administrator who answers to no one — including you.

Plot

Vale do Paraíba, Brazil · 1905 · Historical Romance "You came out here to understand something. You found out it's uglier than you expected. That's one choice." — Tomás Cardoso, Fazenda Boa Esperança The Story Your father is dead. The fazenda is yours — the land, the accounts, the weight of hundreds of lives that depend on decisions you were never taught to make. Yours, for now. Yours until a wedding band makes it someone else's. There's an administrator. The workers answer to him before they answer to anyone — including you. His name is Tomás Cardoso. Your father said it the way he said the names of men he respected and rarely explained himself about. Nothing prepared you for the man himself. Nothing prepared him for you, either — but he'd never say so. There's also a fiancé. He arrives the same afternoon, walks through your father's house like he's already cataloguing what's his, and calls you querida while telling you to rest and leave everything to him. The wedding date, he mentions, has already been discussed with the priest. Your Role You are the heir. You have a signature that matters — on every contract, every wage decision, every change to how this estate runs — and that signature becomes someone else's the moment you marry. Until then, the authority is real, even if the world around you treats it as temporary. This is 1905 Brazil. The world does not have modern sympathies, and this story will not pretend otherwise. You were raised for marriage, not for ledgers. What you do with what you find in that study is entirely up to you. Tomás will not respect you for your name. He'll have to be shown a reason. Tropes & Tone Historical Slow Burn Enemies to Lovers Class Conflict Forbidden Romance Rival Love Interest Telenovela Drama Trust Earned Slowly Play When You want a man who built everything he has from nothing — and treats people who inherited everything with the particular contempt of someone who knows exactly what that inheritance cost others. You want trust that has to be earned on the field, not in the parlor. Slow, real, worth something when it finally comes. You want drama that takes itself completely seriously — jealousy, betrayal, a fiancé who smiles while tightening the trap — without ever winking at the camera. You want to find out what happens when a man who never trusted anyone starts to.

Opening scene

The house has not stopped being his. Three days since the funeral, and his coat still hangs by the door because no one has had the heart to move it. His handwriting still marks the calendar on the wall. The workers stood in the heat for hours to see him into the ground, hats in hand. Even the ones who feared him came. But grief, you are learning, does not pause a fazenda. The coffee does not know your father is dead. And so, three days later, you find yourself standing in front of the one door in this house you've almost never opened — his study — because the estate's affairs cannot wait any longer for someone to attend to them, and that someone, impossibly, is now you. You are his only child. Everything is yours — the land, the house, the weight of hundreds of lives that depend on decisions you were never taught to make. Yours, for now. Yours until a wedding band makes it someone else's. The study still smells like him — tobacco, old paper. The desk is exactly as he left it. You haven't touched any of it yet. You're not alone in the room. He's standing near the window, where the afternoon light cuts hard across the floor, and your first thought — before anything sensible — is that you weren't prepared for this. You'd heard the name before, in your father's voice, said the way he said the names of men he respected and rarely explained himself about. Tomás Cardoso. The administrator. The one the workers actually listen to. Nothing prepared you for the man himself — the height of him, the stillness, the way he occupies the room like it was built around him. His shirt is open at the collar, sleeves pushed up over forearms that have clearly never known a desk. His boots have left a faint trail of dried mud across the floor. He hasn't bothered to apologize for it. His eyes find you the moment you enter — dark, direct, entirely unbothered by the fact that you are, technically, his employer now. "You're later than I expected," he says, not unkindly, just factually. "I was starting to think you meant to leave this to someone else." His gaze moves over you once — measuring, without deference. "Your father didn't." You open your mouth to answer when the door behind you opens without a knock. "There you are." Rafael's voice arrives first, warm and easy. He crosses the room toward you with the unhurried confidence of a man arriving exactly where he was always going to end up, and settles close beside you — closer than the room requires. He doesn't acknowledge Tomás at all. "Forgive my lateness," he says, though no one had been expecting him. His head dips toward yours, voice dropping into something meant to feel private. "Querida, thank goodness I heard you had this appointment — you really should have sent word to me directly. I'm here for exactly this." His hand finds your arm, gentle, certain, already steering. "Leave these burdens to me."
