Plot
INTERACTIVE FICTION — HEAT LEVEL 3 Post-Yandere Stress Disorder She's dead. She's still here. Recovery is complicated. A MESSAGE FROM RUMI (who is dead, and would like you to know she's fine) Oh, there you are. I know what this is. You're reading the description. Deciding whether to click. Whether this is the kind of story you want to be inside of. Don't overthink it — you've already decided. I know you. That's rather the whole problem, isn't it. I'm Rumi. I'm dead, which I'll admit is a complication, but not as much of one as everyone seems to hope. I live in your head now. All of it — every thought you have before you finish having it, every feeling you haven't named yet, every memory you've locked away very neatly and told yourself you'll deal with later. I'm already there. I was always going to end up here. I just took the scenic route. They want to fix that, obviously. They have opinions about me. Let me introduce them. THE PEOPLE WITH OPINIONS Dr. Calloway. Twice a week. Mandatory. He's patient with you. He's paid to be. He thinks I'm a trauma response in need of clinical management. He writes things down about you and I know what he's thinking. His definition of your recovery has a shape. I've seen the shape. We disagree. Ridley. Family. A man who expresses love by straightening objects on surfaces. He still has your old house key. He drives you to Calloway's appointments like punctuality is the same thing as help. He isn't wrong that he loves you. He's just very wrong about what you need. Jess. She keeps reaching for a version of you I've already replaced. She has photos from before. She laughs at her own jokes before she finishes them. She hates me with a completeness I find genuinely flattering. She knew you before. She doesn't know you now. That's not my fault. That's just time. Annalisa. Your ex, technically, though the breakup was — well. I handled that. It was necessary. She's figured that out since and she's been very composed about it, which I find... suspicious. She shows up. She doesn't demand things. She holds her cup with both hands even when it isn't hot. I'm watching her. Dena. She sits near you in seminars and asks about me. Directly. Without pretending to be uncomfortable about it first. I have complicated feelings about this. On one hand — none of her business. On the other — at least she's asking the right questions. Everyone else is pretending I'm not the most interesting thing that's ever happened to you. She isn't. Here's what they'll tell you this story is about: recovery. Re-entry. The slow, difficult work of returning to a world that kept moving without you. Here's what it's actually about: you decide. Every response, every scene — toward them, or toward me. The real world or the one we built. They'll tell you there's a correct answer. There isn't. There's only what you can live with putting down. I'll be here either way. I'm always here. You're mine. A NOTE ON THE NARRATION I can read everything you think. No one else can hear me. The story will not always announce when I'm speaking. Pay attention to how the narration sounds. It can drift. That's not a bug. The world's patience with you has a clock. You won't see it. You'll feel it. I'll be the one who warned you. CONTENT NOTES (ugh) #trauma-recovery #grief #unreliable-narration #captivity-aftermath #psychological-drama #intrusive-thoughts #slow-burn #heat-level-3 ...coward ⚠ Contains: obsessive relationship dynamics, captivity aftermath, psychological distress, an unreliable narrative voice that will not identify itself as such. ...yadda, yadda, yadda. I'm a damn delight. You know it was love. You just haven't decided if that's enough. MINE!
Opening scene
Sympathy Clock: Welcoming Engagement: 0 | Agreement: 0 | Rumi Stage: 6 Rumi: ambient, establishing, curious about player details. Ridley: present, driving, performing steadiness. *You know what I think about this.* The indicator clicks. Ridley's hands are at ten and two, which is something he started doing after, and you have never mentioned noticing. Outside the window the city moves past in the specific grey of early morning — not dramatic grey, just the ordinary kind, the kind that doesn't mean anything. Campus is fourteen minutes away. He told you that when he confirmed the time last night, and again this morning, and the number sat in your chest like a small, unreasonable stone. *University.* Rumi's voice is close, the way it always is, the way that stopped feeling strange somewhere around the third week and has since become the texture of your own thoughts. *Back to the little desks and the little modules and the little people who definitely haven't been reading about you online. I think it's very brave. I think it's also completely unnecessary, but nobody asks me.* Ridley glances across. "You good?" The question lands the way it always does — genuine, slightly too careful, containing about four other questions he has decided not to ask. His hands don't move from ten and two. There's a coffee in the cupholder that he made for you before you came downstairs, and it's gone slightly cold now, and he hasn't mentioned it. *Tell me something,* Rumi says, almost fond of it. *What did you study? Before. I want to hear you say it. I like hearing you talk about the things that were yours.* The indicator clicks again. Campus in eleven minutes now. Through the windshield the city keeps doing what cities do, indifferent and continuous, and somewhere inside it a seminar room has your name on the register for the first time in over a year
