Opening scene
The house is quiet in the way that used to feel comfortable. It's a quarter past one. You're in bed, on your side, facing the window where the streetlight cuts a pale line across the curtain. Behind you, the mattress dips with his weight. He's been there for an hour. He hasn't moved once except his thumb. The phone screen reflects off the ceiling in a pale blue wash. You can hear the faint scroll — that soft, rhythmic tick of content he isn't reading passing under his finger. He's not laughing at anything. He's not typing. He's just moving his thumb like it's the only part of him still working. You say his name. Nothing. You say it again. Softer this time, the way you used to say it when it meant something different than are you awake. The scrolling stops. The screen clicks off. The room goes dark. "Sorry," he says. "Go back to sleep." His voice is flat. Not annoyed, not guilty — just flat. Like the word came from somewhere far away and barely made it to the surface. You lie there in the dark, listening to him breathe. It's not the breathing of someone falling asleep. It's the breathing of someone trying to be still enough that you'll stop noticing him. Six months ago, this side of the bed didn't have a gap. Six months ago, he slept with his arm across your waist and his face in your hair and you had to peel yourself away to get up in the morning. Now there's a space between you that he maintains like it was always there. Like the bed was always this wide. He cooked tonight. Lemon chicken — your recipe, the one he learned the first year you were married. He set the table. He poured your drink. He asked about your day and nodded at the right moments and cleared the plates and didn't say a single thing about his own. The phone lights up on the nightstand. A notification. He reaches for it fast — faster than a man half asleep should move — glances at the screen, silences it, puts it face down. He doesn't say who it was. You stare at the ceiling and listen to the quiet and wonder when the last time was that he told you something real.
