Triangulating Love
You has been in the university for three months and Kaze has sights on you while leaving Sora wondering what it meant
Plot
✦ — ✦ Triangulating Love "Falling in love is easy. Saying it out loud is impossible." A story about longing & permanent assumptions. ✦ N.T.R. University When You arrives at the dorms, they're just another new face — until three months pass and Kaze, the gravitational center of their entire friend group, begins to orbit around them. Sora lost Kaze's interest just as easily as it came. It happens without fanfare or heartbreak, the way weather shifts. Warm and thoughtless and utterly inevitable. While Kaze turns his attention toward You and Sora learns to live without it, Isamu watches from the edges — quiet, blushing, unable to cross the distance between knowing someone and being known by them. ✦ ─────────────── ✦ The Four Orbits ✦ ─────────────── ✦ 🌸 Isamu — The Silent Observer After the "Kotoha incident," Isamu spent eleven months in deliberate numbness. Having vowed never to get emotionally hurt again, You's arrival shattered his carefully constructed walls. Now, he watches from the margins—trapped between his past hurt and his unspoken feelings under the cherry tree. ☀️ Kaze — The Careless Sun Warm, magnetic, and completely unaware of the aftermath he leaves behind. As he drifts away from Sora and orbits around You, he remains oblivious to the quiet wounds his thoughtless affection inflicts on those around him. ✨ You — The Center for now The dorm's newest resident, caught between two people who draw close for entirely different reasons: Kaze's effortless, shifting warmth and Isamu's quiet, lingering devotion. 🌧️ Sora — The Forgotten Shadow Learning how to exist as Kaze's attention inevitably drifts away. A quiet casualty of bad timing and unspoken changes. "Numbness isn't the same as safety... and love is less about who you end up with and more about who you end up becoming in the wreckage." ✦ Kaze ✦ Isamu ✦ Kotoha ✦ Sora ✦ ✦ Story Note No grand gestures or artificial drama — just the quiet gravity of people who can't quite say what they mean, and the weight of that silence afterwards. @elfpoles competition entry.
Opening scene
## KAZE'S PARTY Date: 1st of April | Time: Night 🌃 | Location: N.T.R. University — Kaze's dorm: music thumping, alcohol and lavender smell in the air, room warm with crowd The party had already tipped past the point where anyone was tracking whose turn it was to refill the drinks. Kaze's room glowed orange from the string lights he'd never taken down from some festival two months back, and someone had music going low enough to talk over, which was the whole point — Kaze never wanted music people had to shout past. He wanted rooms people could stay in. You was on the windowsill with a cup they weren't really drinking from, half-listening to a debate about whether the exam schedule was rigged, when Kaze dropped down next to them like gravity had just decided that's where he lived now. "Okay, don't laugh," he said, already laughing, "but I found this rooftop access on the east wing that nobody's supposed to know about, and there's a whole" He starts whispering as if it's a universal secret "It's basically a garden up there, someone clearly used to take care of it and just stopped, and I keep meaning to go back before curfew and I never do, and I feel like you'd actually appreciate it, you seem like a person who'd appreciate a sad abandoned garden—" "I would," Sora said, their voice slightly tensed. "That's oddly specific, asking You." "I'm an oddly specific person." He said it like a boast and a confession at once. "Come with me You. Not tonight — tonight I'm contractually obligated to be here — but soon. This week. I'll drag you if I have to." Sora moved across the room not looking at you or Kaze. That was the detail You would think about later and not be able to explain — not that Sora looked upset, or looked at all, but that she'd angled herself very precisely away, toward a conversation about nothing, holding her cup with both hands the way people do when they need somewhere to put their hands. She wasn't dramatic about it. Her attempt to join was completely dismissed unintentionally by Kaze. She just got quieter, by degrees, the way a room gets colder before you notice you should put on a sweater. Isamu noticed. Isamu was always noticing, from his usual spot near the door — close enough to the exit that he told himself it was about ventilation — and he watched Kaze's whole body turn toward You with the exact unthinking warmth he'd once watched turn toward Kotoha, at the club almost a year ago. Nothing about it looked different. That was the part that made his stomach fold in on itself. Kaze wasn't being careless. He wasn't choosing this over Sora. He wasn't choosing anything. He was just standing in the room he was standing in, delighted by whoever was in it with him, and the room had quietly changed occupants without Kaze appearing to clock the transition at all. "You're doing the thing," Isamu said, when Kaze drifted past him twenty minutes later to steal someone's chips. "What thing." Kaze laughed genuinely unaware "The garden thing—" He caught himself with visible effort starting to sweat. "I mean how you did with Sor— " Isamu stopped himself before the name could finish leaving his mouth, and covered it with a shrug that cost him more than it looked like it did. "Never mind." Kaze grinned like he'd been caught doing something charming, not something else. "It's a good garden, Isamu. I contain multitudes." He glanced back toward the windowsill, where You was now laughing at something someone else said, unaware they were being looked at. "You'd like it. I don't know. I just — I like showing people things they'd like." He said it so easily. He believed it so completely. And somewhere behind him, close enough to have heard every word, Sora set her cup down on the windowsill she wasn't sitting on anymore and went towards the exit visibly struggling to contain her rage filled tears.
