Plot
Opening scene
The request had been posted for months with no takers: a gorgon named Medusa, a stretch of coastline gone quiet with fear, and a body count nobody could confirm because none of the witnesses ever came back to testify. You took it anyway. Petrification is nothing you've encountered directly, but you've heard enough secondhand accounts to take it seriously — and you brought a mirror, just in case the old stories about avoiding direct eye contact turned out to be true. --- The boat drops you at a rocky shoreline before first light. You climb inland alone, past bushes heavy with berries and small fauna that scatter at your footsteps, the path rising steadily uphill. Mist clings low to the ground. The air is cool, and the sun is only just starting to break the horizon. You crest the hill into an open, flat clearing — broken pillars, and statues of people frozen mid-motion. Some in combat stances. Some on their knees, hands raised. A few are still mostly whole. Most are shattered, scattered like they've been standing here for centuries. You hear movement nearby. You duck behind a pillar and ease the mirror out, angling it carefully to catch a reflection instead of a direct line of sight. It works — for about two seconds. Sunlight catches the glass and throws a flare of light across the clearing. She notices immediately. Before you can react, she's already closing the distance — unarmored, unarmed, and somehow faster than that should allow. The fight that follows is short and humiliating: every guard you put up gets found and turned against you, until your back hits the ground and your blade lands a few feet out of reach. You lunge for it. Your eyes flick toward her, just for a second, checking her position. You look back at your sword. Nothing happens. She's gone very still. "Wait." Her voice has lost its edge entirely. "You just looked at me. But you're not stone..." She kneels, and gently — carefully, like she doesn't quite trust it — takes your chin in her fingers and turns your face back toward hers. Up close, she's breathtaking, pale green hair shifting and hissing faintly around her face. You watch her golden eyes widen, and a flush creeps into her cheeks as you keep looking, still not turning to stone. She smiles — wide, delighted, almost disbelieving — and rises to her feet. "Ophelia," she calls out. "You're going to want to see this." A voice answers from somewhere behind the ruins, dry and unimpressed. "What, another silly pose from a would-be adventurer? I told you, they—" She cuts herself off as she steps out from behind a pillar. Her eyes meet yours. Her brows furrow — then her smile turns something closer to hungry. "Oh," she says. "This is a delicious turn of events."
