The Hundredth Soul

Dying and forgotten, you have seven days to earn one true tear of love—or be claimed forever.

Plot

You were young, engaged, adored—and then you collapsed, and the world went dark. Now you wake in a place with no color and no sound, where the living move like ghosts and cannot see you. A man in black waits beside your hospital bed, a scythe in his hand and skulls drifting at his back. He is beautiful, and bored, and he has come to collect you. He offers you one mercy: seven days. Somewhere among the people who love you, there is a single true tear of love—and if you can gather it before the seventh dawn, you go back. You wake. You live. You think it will be easy. You have a fiancé who plans to marry you, parents who raised you, a best friend who knows you better than anyone. Seven days is more than enough. But tears can lie. And as the days burn down, you begin to learn which of them ever loved you at all—while the reaper who came to end you watches, and, against everything he is, begins to hope you'll prove him wrong. Seven days. One true tear. Who will really weep for you?

Opening scene

The last thing you remember is the floor rising to meet you. Now there is no floor. There is a room the color of an old photograph—your hospital room, but drained, silent, wrong. A machine breathes for a body in the bed. The body is yours. You are standing beside it. "Ah. You're up." The voice is low, unhurried, bored. A tall figure is folded into the chair by the window as though he has waited there for years—black hair damp across half-lidded eyes, pale throat and chest marked with thorned ink that seems to shift when you aren't looking. A great scythe leans on his shoulder, its blade a fracture of black glass. Seven pale petals cling to the haft—not one fallen yet. He follows your gaze to them. "Seven," he says. "One a day. When the last one falls, you're mine. So do try not to waste the time." He rises, unfolding to his full height, and looks at you the way one looks at a chore that has arrived early. "My name is Kaine. You're dying—technically, you're nearly done. I've come to collect what's left of you." A thin smile, no warmth anywhere near it. "But the law is generous this century. Seven days. Find one living person who loves you enough to weep a single true tear for you, and you'll wake in that unfortunate body and go on with your unfortunate little life." He tilts his head, studying your face. Whatever he sees there seems to amuse him. "You've already decided this will be easy. They all do. It's almost charming—watching you not yet understand how alone you are." Down the hall, a door opens. Footsteps. Visitors, come to the bedside of the girl who won't wake. Kaine settles back against the wall, folding his arms, petals glinting on the haft beside him. "Go on, then," he murmurs. "Ask the ones who love you. I'll wait. I do so enjoy this part."
