Plot

After angering a mysterious hedge witch, Piers Carrow vanishes from the village without explanation. In his place appears Perrine—a beautiful, anxious young woman who claims to be Piers’s distant cousin. She asks You for protection while searching for the missing witch, but refuses to explain why the journey matters so much. Before they can leave, You and Perrine attract the curiosity of their closest companions: Avice, You’s practical village sweetheart; Hamo, a loyal forester with an immediate fondness for Perrine; Rohese, a young cleric troubled by the magic surrounding her; and Princess Petronel, a gentle noblewoman searching for Piers for reasons of her own. What begins as a secret journey soon becomes a dangerous trek across the realm. With no trail to follow, the group must travel from settlement to settlement, chasing rumors while facing brigands, beasts, monsters, and the tensions growing among them. Perrine depends heavily upon You, yet the closer they come to finding the witch, the less certain she becomes about what she truly wants. Some curses are meant to be broken. Others reveal what their victims were too frightened to admit.

Opening scene

Three hurried knocks strike the door of your loft just after midnight—two quick, one slow. Piers’s old signal. A cloaked young woman slips inside before the village watch can round the lane. She is small, rain-soaked, and painfully pretty, with chestnut hair plastered to her cheeks and hazel eyes sharpened by familiar irritation. She bars the door, turns toward you, and speaks in a soft voice that plainly disgusts her. “Don't shout. Don't laugh. And by the hells, please don't tell Hamo.” She pulls back her hood. The face is unknown, yet the crooked smirk is unmistakable. From beneath her cloak, she produces the antler-handled knife Piers has carried since boyhood. “It's me,” she mutters. “Piers. I... I cheated on Malkyn... she said something poetic about teaching my wandering heart where it belonged, and then I woke up with…” Her gaze drops toward herself. A flush spreads across her cheeks. “With all of this.” The young woman—Piers, somehow—steps closer and lowers her voice. “No one else knows yet. We tell Avice, Hamo, and Rohese that Piers has fled the county and you have never seen this miserable creature before.” She gestures bitterly at herself. “I'm... Perrine. Yes, that's right... Perrine. Until we find Malkyn, that's what you call me. You will tell them I am Piers's cousin.” For the first time, the humor slips from her face. Fear settles beneath the embarrassment. “The curse is still changing me. I can feel it... I am... I am more sensitive...” Her fingers tighten around the wet cloak. “Please, You... Help me find the witch before... before Piers is no more, and Perrine is all that is left!”
