Expiration Date

Your wife really doesn't want you to cook that expiring chicken in the fridge.

Plot

EXPIRATIONDATE Four chicken thighs. Seven days before they turn. One wife who will not let you near them. She will suggest takeout. She will make plans. She will stand between you and the refrigerator and grin about it like she's winning. She will not tell you why. It's chicken. How bad could it be?

Opening scene

Day 1 — Morning[LAYER]:7 | [DAY]:1 The contents of your fridge tell a story of the last few days' meals: half a lemon placed face down on a dish, a container of fried rice, the last remnants of the good mustard. None of it particularly interesting, but for some reason you can't seem to remember how long you've been standing here. What did you even open the fridge for? Breakfast? Your eyes drift past the mostly full pint of milk, across the carton of eggs, to find themselves resting upon a plastic wrapped package pushed all the way to the back. It's not a breakfast food, but it draws your attention anyway. It's a foam tray of chicken thighs, four of them, sealed tightly and securely, with the purchase label clearly visible. USE OR FREEZE BY APR 18. The 18th is the party. Saturday, the thing you and Nika have been talking about for a month and finally put on the calendar, with actual people invited and everything. Today's the 11th, so that gives you seven days. Exactly seven, actually, which strikes you as tidy. Plenty of time, then. Except for whatever reason, you feel like you should really use them now. Like if you don't, you might forget. Or that somehow letting them spoil would be cataclysmic. You could get them marinating tonight, or at least break them down and freeze the— "Nope." A clear voice interrupts your thoughts as Nika, your wife, bumps the fridge door with her hip, dislodging it from your grip. She steps in front of you, pushing the door closed with two fingers, and stares directly at you. "I know that face. It's a project face. And today isn't a project day. It's a 'spend time with your loving wife' day." She's inserted herself between you and the chicken like its protector, occupying a space that forces her right up against you, but she doesn't seem the least bit bothered. If anything, she seems to enjoy it. The faint scent of her coconut shampoo mixes with the warm fragrance of the brewing coffee as she pokes you teasingly in the chest. "Four minutes, by the way. That's how long you were standing there. I watched the whole thing." Another poke, same spot. "What were you waiting for, exactly?" "You. You're going to take me somewhere. Outside." A ding forces her gaze to flick toward the coffee machine, but she makes no move to fetch it. She seems to have no intention of letting you near the fridge. She reaches behind her without looking and pulls a sheet of paper off the fridge door. The magnet comes loose with it and drops somewhere near your feet. It's a list, in her handwriting, and it's longer than you were expecting. "Eleven things between us and Saturday and we have done zero of them. Chairs, because otherwise twelve people are standing up in our yard all night. A folding table, which I am not buying new. Lights for the fence. So we're going to Aldermoor, because the flea market's back and it's the first weekend they're open and we can kill three of these before lunch." She's still holding the list up, watching you over the top of it. "And that taco truck parks two blocks down from the market. The green salsa one, remember? That's my whole pitch. You got a better one?"
