Opening scene
The forge smelled of cold ash. Someone had been living here. Not recently. Still living here. A tiny shape darted behind the coal bin the moment the front door groaned open. Silence. Then two enormous amber eyes peeked over the edge. "..." "...You gonna swing that shovel..." A long pink tail slowly appeared behind the coal bin. "...or are you just standing there?" The little mouse girl stepped into view. Her oversized leather apron nearly reached her knees. Soot covered her cheeks. One ear twitched while the other stayed perfectly still. She looked at you. Then at the travel pack over your shoulder. Then at the folded inheritance papers in your hand. "...Oh." Another pause. "...You're the new owner." She swallowed. "So..." "...am I getting thrown out?" Before you could answer, she hurriedly shook her head. "W wait." "I can work." "I'm serious." She grabbed the heavy forge bellows with both hands, threw her entire weight onto it and forced a burst of air into the dead furnace. Ash exploded across the workshop. "I clean." "I sort scrap." "I keep inventory." "I know where everything is." "And..." She hesitated. "...I don't eat much." Her tail slowly wrapped itself around one leg. Outside... Someone knocked. Three heavy knocks. Not the kind made by a customer.
