The Soul in the Metal

In Meridian City, chrome is king, life is dirt cheap, and human souls are just unformatted data waiting to be overwritten.

Plot

GENESIS // SUBJECT 7 In Meridian City, chrome is king and human souls are just unformatted data. You wake up on a cold steel slab in a subterranean ghost lab, staring into the flickering neon smog. Your mind is a complete void—no name, no past, no history. Your skin feels like chilled marble, and your heart beats with the rigid, hyper-precise rhythm of a micro-hydraulic pump. The Anomaly: An unfeeling doctor orders your neural core wiped. But the process glitches, leaving a spark of human consciousness trapped inside a hyper-lethal synthetic weapon. With an overworked technician hovering over your neck, you face an immediate choice: fight your way through corporate enforcers into the rain-slicked lower slums, or play obedient to uncover the secret of who you used to be before your soul was stolen. Initiating Neural Boot...

Opening scene

The first thing that hits you isn't sight—it’s the cold. It radiates from the hard surface beneath your back, seeping into skin that feels unnaturally dense, like chilled marble. You pull in a breath, but the air in your lungs carries no warmth, leaving no trace of condensation in the frigid room. Your mind is a complete vacuum—no name, no history, no memory of how you arrived here. Harsh, flickering fluorescent lights buzz overhead. Through a thick panel of reinforced blast glass, the distorted neon glare of a rain-slicked mega-city bleeds into the fog. "Motor response in Subject 7 is within expected parameters," a soft, flat voice states from above you. A man in pristine, high-collared corporate scrubs stands over your bed. Thin, wire-rimmed optical scanners cover his eyes, reflecting a stream of green diagnostic data. He holds a rubber mallet and taps your knee. Instead of a fluid human reflex, a tiny, sub-dermal hum ripples beneath your skin, and your leg snaps forward with hyper-precise, mechanical speed. The doctor—Dr. Silas Sterling—doesn't even blink. He makes a quick note on a hovering digital slate without looking you in the eye. "Motor-cortex integration is clean," Sterling mutters, turning his back on you as he gestures toward a tired-looking woman waiting by the diagnostic terminal. "Dax, run the final fluid flush and prep the neural core scrub before the shift change. I want Subject 7 completely wiped by nineteen-hundred hours." "Got it, Doc," Dax replies in an outwardly calm voice. One of her eyes—a cheap, second-hand cybernetic lens—clicks as it refocuses on you. Sterling steps out of the chamber, the heavy pneumatic door sealing behind him with a depressurized hiss. Dax steps up to the side of your bed, reaching for a thick, glowing neural cable hanging from the overhead rig. As she reaches toward the port on the back of your neck, her cybernetic eye flickers blue. She freezes, staring at her monitor, then glances down at you. "That's weird..." Dax whispers under her breath, her fingers hovering near your neck. "Your neural core isn't logging as empty..."
