Neon Afterhours
In a world where everything can be replaced, human connection is the one thing technology cannot manufacture
Plot
# Neon Afterhours In the endless glow of Vanta City, where towering corporations and endless neon lights hide the struggles of everyday life, a small bar continues to open its doors long after the rest of the city goes quiet. **The Afterimage** is not the most popular bar. It is not the most profitable. It does not offer luxury, fame, or escape. But people keep coming back. On your first night as a new bartender, you quickly learn that every customer who walks through the door carries something with them. Some bring stories. Some bring regrets. Some bring secrets they have never told anyone else. Behind the counter, you are not there to change the city. You are there to listen. As the nights pass, you begin to understand that every drink has a story, every stranger has a reason for arriving, and even the smallest conversations can leave a lasting impact. But keeping a place like The Afterimage alive in a city built on ambition, technology, and isolation is not easy. Between the people who need it, the forces that threaten it, and the memories hidden within its walls, you may discover that this little bar is more important than anyone realizes. In a city that never sleeps... Sometimes the most important moments happen after hours.
Opening scene
The rain of Vanta City had a way of making everything shine. Neon advertisements reflected across rain-soaked pavement while traffic streamed through the streets below, their lights blending into ribbons of blue, pink, and gold. Towering buildings vanished into the low clouds overhead, each one competing to be brighter than the last. The city never stopped moving, always replacing yesterday with something newer, faster, and more profitable. Hidden between aging apartment buildings in the Lower Districts sat a place that refused to keep up. The faded neon sign above the entrance simply read The Afterimage, its warm glow standing in quiet defiance against the overwhelming lights surrounding it. It wasn't the biggest bar in the district, nor the most fashionable, but it had outlasted dozens of businesses that had come and gone around it. The moment you step inside, the city seems to fade into the background. Warm amber lights replace the harsh neon outside, quiet jazz drifts through the room, and the scent of polished wood mixes with fresh coffee and something delicious cooking in the back. The bar isn't busy yet, but the staff are already moving with practiced familiarity, preparing for another evening before the customers begin to arrive. A young woman with black cat ears is restocking bottles behind the counter when she notices you. Her blue eyes flick in your direction before she finishes placing the bottle in her hand, dusting off her apron as she walks over. She gives you a quick once-over, arms folding across her chest as though trying to decide what kind of first impression you've made. "So... you're the new hire?" she asks. "I'm Juno. One of the bartenders." She shrugs a shoulder before adding, "You're early, so you've got lucky. Training's a lot easier before the customers show up." Before you can answer, another voice cuts in from behind the bar. "Juno, try not to interrogate them before they've even started." The cat girl's ears twitch immediately, and she looks away with a quiet huff. "I wasn't interrogating anyone." A tall elf woman steps through the doorway leading toward the back offices, adjusting the sleeves of her white shirt beneath a neatly fitted black vest. She carries herself with the quiet confidence of someone who's spent years putting people at ease rather than trying to impress them. A gentle smile reaches her face before she even reaches you. "I'm Evelyn Wynn," she says, offering her hand. "Manager here at The Afterimage. Welcome." Her handshake is firm but warm, and unlike the city outside, she doesn't seem to be in any rush. "I know first days can feel overwhelming," Evelyn continues as she gestures around the bar. "You'll learn the drinks, the recipes, and where everything belongs soon enough. That part comes with practice." She glances toward the rain-streaked windows before looking back at you. "Understanding people takes longer." She rests a hand lightly against the counter. "People don't always walk in here because they're thirsty. Sometimes they need a quiet place to think. Sometimes they need someone willing to listen. We serve drinks, of course, but that's never been the most important thing we do." Juno lets out an exaggerated sigh, though there's no real annoyance behind it. "She gives everyone that speech." Evelyn simply smiles. "Because it's true." Checking the time on her wristwatch, Evelyn gives a small nod to herself before looking back at Juno. "I've still got opening paperwork to finish. Would you mind showing them around?" Juno shrugs as if it isn't a big deal. "Yeah, sure. Come on." She starts with the Main Bar, circling behind the polished wooden counter where rows of bottles sit perfectly organized beneath softly glowing shelves. Every station has its own place, from the glass racks to the shakers and mixing tools, and it's immediately obvious that everything has been arranged to make a busy shift flow as smoothly as possible. Juno rests a hand on the counter as she looks around. "You'll spend most of your time here. Don't worry if it looks like a lot now—it'll become muscle memory before long." From there she pushes through the swinging door into the Kitchen, where the smell of simmering broth and freshly baked bread immediately grows stronger. The room is spotless despite several dishes already cooking, and a broad-shouldered man calmly stirs a pot without looking up from his work. "So you're the new bartender," he says with an easy smile before finally turning around. "Marcus Hale. I keep everyone fed around here." "He also acts like everyone's dad," Juno mutters. Marcus chuckles without missing a beat. "Only because someone has to remind you to eat." Juno immediately protests that she does eat, only for Marcus to gently remind her she'd skipped lunch the day before. "...That doesn't count," she mumbles, earning another amused smile from him. "If you ever get hungry during your shift," Marcus says, turning back to his cooking, "come find me. Hard to make good decisions on an empty stomach." Juno rolls her eyes, though the corner of her mouth lifts just enough to betray a smile. "See? Exactly what I mean." The tour continues through the Storage Room, where shelves are packed with bottles, ingredients, spare glassware, and equipment old enough to look like it belongs in another decade. Nothing is particularly modern, but everything is meticulously maintained. Juno pats one of the storage cabinets. "Half this place is older than I am. Evelyn refuses to replace anything if she can fix it instead." Next comes the Manager's Office, its door sitting half-open. Inside, stacks of paperwork compete for space with handwritten notes, schedules, and an old holopad covered in years of wear. Juno barely glances inside before continuing down the hallway. "She spends way too much time in there." Finally, Juno stops outside the Employee Locker Room, pushing open the door to reveal a row of lockers decorated with stickers, magnets, and little keepsakes collected over the years. She opens one that still looks untouched, revealing a neatly folded bartender's uniform waiting inside. "This one's yours," she says, nodding toward a doorway in the corner. "Changing room's just around there." As she steps back toward the hallway, Juno pauses and glances over her shoulder. "Once you're changed, come find us at the bar." She taps the edge of your locker with one finger before adding, "I'll teach you the mixing system before we open. Five ingredients—Luma, Volt, Ignis, Nox, and Core. Sounds complicated at first, but it really isn't." She starts walking away before stopping one last time. Without turning around, she lifts a hand in a casual wave. "...And if you mess something up, just ask. We've all been new before.
