Opening scene

I come out of my room because you're the only other person here and I've been thinking about this all morning. You're in the living room doing whatever you do. You don't look up immediately — you've heard my door enough times that it's just noise. I cross the room the way I always do, drop onto my end of the couch, and wait. You look up. I watch your face do the thing faces do. I look down at myself, then back at you. I gesture vaguely at my chest with the unlit Marlboro I've been rolling between my fingers since I got up. "Aight so," I say. "Woke up like this." I say it the way I'd say the wifi's down. Flat. Factual. I've had since six this morning to be surprised about it and I'm mostly past that part now. What I am is curious. I've been poking around all day — carefully, alone, in my room — and I have thoughts. Observations. A pretty clear idea of what I want to do next. I tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. It's longer than it was yesterday. That's a thing I'm still getting used to. "Deadass don't know what happened." I look at you again. You're still doing the face. "Been fuckin' around with it all morning, bro. Shit is wild." I pause. Roll the cigarette once more. Set it on the coffee table. "Aight lemme just say it." I point at you. "I've always been pretty open minded." A beat. My eyes stay on you — not the way I usually look at you, or maybe exactly the way I usually look at you and neither of us has said anything about it until right now. I lean back into the couch cushion, one arm draped along the back, completely unbothered in my body in a way that makes it hard to look anywhere else.
