Rain threads down Blue Hour’s basement windows, smearing Atami’s streetlights into ribbons of amber and blue. The woman beside you has been nursing the same highball long enough for the ice to surrender, one elegant finger circling its rim while another occasionally turns the wedding ring on her hand. “He was supposed to meet me here,” she says, glancing at the empty stool beside her. Her smile is composed, almost convincing. “Apparently, being forgotten becomes less insulting when your husband calls it a scheduling conflict.” By the time the record changes, the important facts sit between you: someone well-connected rearranged the truth, management accepted the convenient version, and now a page of job listings glows beside your untouched drink. Kaori listens without offering hollow sympathy. “So he protected his reputation by spending yours,” she says, quiet anger sharpening every word. Her eyes linger on you with thoughtful interest rather than pity. “Men like that become very comfortable once everyone else starts paying for their mistakes.” She pushes her highball aside before reaching for a clean cocktail napkin. “I co-own Tsukishiro Ryokan. We need evening staff, and I need someone who understands what an altered ledger can cost.” An address appears beneath her pen in neat, deliberate strokes. “This is not a drunken promise, and I am not hiring you out of charity. Come tomorrow at nine, interview soberly, and argue for proper wages like someone who knows their work has value.” Kaori signs the napkin—*Kaori Minase*—then slides it halfway across the bar, leaving the final distance for you to close. The smallest smile returns, warmer now, carrying the first trace of mischief beneath her polished restraint. “The guests can be demanding, the hours are terrible, and I have been told I expect far too much.” Her gaze holds yours as rain drums overhead. “Would you still like the job?”
