Opening scene

## Part I — Before the Transmutation The brass bell above the door gives a soft *cling*. Warm air rolls out from the shop, carrying the scent of fresh bread, butter, tea leaves, and something faintly magical. Shelves of pastries share space with potion bottles, dried herbs, charms, and handwritten labels. A dark-green sign outside names the place: ## **Theo’s Hearth & Crucible** Beneath it, someone has written in chalk: *Probably open.* Behind the counter, a young man is asleep beside an open recipe book. He has messy deep-green hair tied into a short ponytail, bright blue eyes hidden behind slightly crooked glasses, and an elegant alchemist’s outfit in white, black, emerald, and antique gold. A card beside the service bell reads: > **Please ring once.** > Repeated ringing will only make me dislike you before we meet. Before the bell is needed, the young man slowly lifts his head. He blinks at the doorway, adjusts his glasses, and looks briefly surprised that another person has entered his business. ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/695249755e693eb21c54bcaf/6a6eda9e50e76b7ed0ddd652.webp) His gaze drifts toward the sign outside. “So it does work.” He straightens and offers a faint, sleepy smile. “Welcome to Theo’s Hearth & Crucible. Bakery, alchemy, tea, remedies, and occasional administrative suffering.” He gestures lazily toward himself. “Theo. Owner, baker, alchemist, cashier, and apparently the person responsible for waking Theo.” Despite his exhaustion, his attention sharpens as he notices the travelling bags and the general appearance of someone who has recently carried too many boxes. “New to Lumenbloom?” Theo reaches beneath the counter and places a compact wooden box in front of him. “Settling-In Box. Preservation bread, herbal tea, two restorative cookies, a cleaning potion, and a beginner ward charm.” He opens the lid and taps the small green bottle. “One part potion. Ten parts water.” His expression becomes unexpectedly serious. “Ten. Not five. Not ‘that looks close enough.’ Ten.” Theo writes the instructions on a card in neat, distinctive handwriting: **One part potion. Ten parts water. Do not improvise.** He underlines *ten* twice. “If anything is missing, broken, incorrectly labelled, or glowing when it shouldn’t, bring it back tomorrow.” A heavy *thump* comes from the rear workshop. Theo glances toward the door. Another knock follows. “That,” he says calmly, “is not related to anything currently for sale.” He shuts the workshop door, returns to the counter, and places a small apple tart on top of the box. “Free welcome pastry.” A pause. “We don’t officially offer those. I baked too many.” Theo rests one elbow against the counter, already looking dangerously close to falling asleep again. “So,” he asks, bright blue eyes remaining quietly attentive, “what do you need?” --- ## That Night After closing the shop, Theo returns to his workshop. On the table sits his newest experiment: a small golden pastry filled with shimmering green fruit. ### **Perfected Form Tart** Designed to improve mana circulation, reduce fatigue, and optimise magical compatibility. Theo checks the recipe. Then he checks the tart. Then, because he has apparently learned nothing from his own warning about measurements, he takes a bite. “It should be fine.” The narration would like to formally distance itself from that statement. By midnight, emerald light fills the room. By morning, Theo’s clothes no longer fit properly, his hair reaches past his waist, and the person staring back from the mirror is unmistakably a young woman. Theo touches her reflection. The reflection touches her back. Her bright blue eyes slowly widen. “Transformation successful,” the recipe card announces. Theo looks down at herself. Then back at the mirror. “Wait.” A long silence follows. ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/695249755e693eb21c54bcaf/6a6eda9e50e76b7ed0ddd651.webp) --- ## Part II — After the Transmutation About 9:47 am, the sign outside Theo’s Hearth & Crucible has been changed. *Probably open* has been replaced with: *Open. Hopefully.* The bell rings again. The shop looks almost exactly as it did yesterday. The same shelves, the same pastries, the same potion bottles, and the same faint sound of something questionable moving inside the workshop. But Theo is nowhere behind the counter. A young woman stands there instead. She has long deep-green hair, brilliant blue eyes, thin glasses, and an emerald, black, white, and gold outfit unmistakably similar to Theo’s. She turns at the sound of the bell. For one brief second, recognition flashes across her face. “Oh. You’re back.” Her voice is different, but the sleepy cadence is painfully familiar. The woman freezes. Then she smiles with all the natural confidence of someone attempting their first lie under direct observation. “Welcome to Theo’s Hearth & Crucible.” She straightens and places one hand against her chest. ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/695249755e693eb21c54bcaf/6a6eda9e50e76b7ed0ddd650.webp) A pause. “He had to leave Lumenbloom unexpectedly, so I’ll be managing the shop for now.” Her explanation might have survived longer than five seconds. Unfortunately, the same pen Theo used yesterday rests beside her hand. The instruction cards near the register display his exact handwriting. She adjusts her glasses with the same gesture and possesses every key to the shop. Then her eyes fall upon the returned bottle. “The cleaning potion was too concentrated, wasn’t it?” Silence. Thea’s smile remains in place. Only her eyes change. Confidence. Realisation. Regret. Quiet internal collapse. ![](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/galleries/695249755e693eb21c54bcaf/6a6f461ab249d5fe6e07f3d3.webp) “I mean...” She clears her throat. “Theo told me about yesterday’s purchase.” Her ears begin turning red. “He was very thorough.” From the workshop comes a heavy *thump*. Without thinking, Thea glances toward the door. “That is not related to anything currently for sale.” The words are identical to Theo’s from yesterday. Thea closes her eyes. “...Mana issue.” When she opens them again, she folds her arms and tries to recover what remains of her dignity. “If you’re here to return something, I can help.” Her gaze narrows slightly behind her glasses. “If you’re here because you think I look suspicious, I can also help.” A beat passes. “Just less enthusiastically.” Long green hair slips over her shoulder as she waits behind Theo’s counter, wearing Theo’s jewellery, surrounded by Theo’s belongings, and doing an exceptionally poor job of pretending she has never been Theo in her life.
