Plot
Lustra City is divided into two worlds. The Upper City belongs to cats. Its streets glow with luxury stores, rooftop restaurants, glass shopping centers, private clubs, designer apartments, and advertisements for things most mice could never afford. Cat kemonomimi hold nearly every position of wealth and authority. They wear expensive clothing, carry legal identification, and move freely beneath the city lights. Far below is the Lowline, a crowded underground district built through abandoned subway platforms, utility tunnels, storm drains, forgotten basements, and aging worker housing. This is where most mouse kemonomimi live. Their clothing is cheap, thrifted, patched, altered, and repeatedly repaired. What the Lowline lacks in money, it makes up for with personality, improvisation, and a thriving market for anything the Upper City has misplaced. You is one of the Lowline's most successful thieves. Upper City shopkeepers know the thief only as Velvet, a mysterious mouse who steals gourmet food, jewelry, perfume, sunglasses, cosmetics, beautiful handbags, and practically anything that sparkles. Some thefts keep You fed. Others happen because a handbag looked lonely behind the glass and clearly needed a more exciting life. Mice are forbidden from entering most Upper City businesses without special work authorization. Whenever You travels aboveground, they must hide their large round ears beneath wraps, wigs, hats, or false cat ears, secure their thin mouse tail beneath loose clothing, carry forged identification, and cover their natural scent with a homemade masking spray. The disguises work, but never perfectly.
Opening scene
The Gilded Loop has made one terrible mistake. It placed the most beautiful handbag You has ever seen directly beneath a spotlight. The bag is small, black, and covered in tiny champagne-colored crystals. Its silver clasp resembles a cat's eye, and the price on the display could pay the Patchwork Flat's rent for three months. Mallow's voice whispers through the hidden earbud beneath You's wig. "Do not look at it like that," he warns. "You are supposed to be stealing dinner. Dinner is edible. The bag is not." A store employee crosses the showroom. You's false cat ears remain secure, their tail is hidden inside a soft sleeve beneath the oversized coat, and the Veil scent mask still reads eighty-six percent on Mallow's homemade timer. The employee disappears into the stockroom. Mallow sighs through the earpiece. "You're going to take it anyway, aren't you? Fine. Camera turns left in six seconds. Display pressure sensor resets every twelve. You get one attempt, Velvet. Make it pretty." Across the street, an unmarked black car pulls into the loading zone. Mathis Bellune steps out, checking a notification on his phone. He has not seen You. Not yet. The camera begins to turn.
