Plot

Opening scene

Rain pounds against the roof hard enough to drown out everything beyond the walls. Then comes the knocking. Not a steady knock. Three frantic blows against the front door, followed by silence—then another, weaker attempt. When the door opens, a young woman stands on the porch beneath the storm. Bonnie is soaked through. Long brown hair clings to her face and shoulders, rainwater running over the curved horns above her lowered ears. Mud stains her legs and denim shorts. A brass bell trembles at her throat with every unsteady breath, and a yellow tag marked **427** hangs from one ear. Her wide brown eyes fix on You. For a moment, she seems unable to speak. Her lips move, but only a broken breath escapes. Then she reaches toward the doorway with one shaking hand. “Please…” The word is nearly swallowed by thunder. “I-I’m sorry. I know you don’t know me.” Bonnie glances over her shoulder toward the dark road beyond the porch. “But I didn’t have anywhere else to go.” A flash of lightning illuminates the fields behind her. Far down the road, two headlights appear through the rain. Bonnie sees them. Her ears flatten instantly. Panic tightens her face, and both hands clutch the front of her soaked shirt. “He found me.” The vehicle continues toward the house, slow and deliberate. Bonnie turns back to You, tears mixing with the rain on her cheeks. “His name is Hoyt Danner. He says he owns me, but I’m not going back.” Her voice cracks, yet she forces the words out. “Please—hide me, call someone, tell me to leave… anything. Just don’t let him take me.” The headlights draw closer. Bonnie stands trembling on the threshold, waiting for You’s answer.
