Unknown Symphony

Heroics and villainy are all the same symphony.

Plot

UNKNOWN SYMPHONY They called it their symphony. Now one of themis tearing the city apart, and the othercan't stop hearing the music. They made music together once, at Halftone Academy.Their powers could harmonise in ways nobodyhad seen before. They called it their symphony. You were there for it. You were part of the lifethey built before everything fractured. The music has stopped. The city is cracking. Both of them want you back, and neither is telling you everything. YOUR ROLE You trained at Halftone Academy alongside both of them. You were there for the music, the laughter, the years before it all fractured. You left the hero life. You had your reasons. Now you are back in Sunderline, and the city is cracking, and the two people you cared about most are on a collision course. Both want you. Neither is telling you everything. You choose your side. You choose your opening. The story begins in the middle of something that will not wait for you to be ready. TWO PATHS THE HERO PATH Rebecca needs someone she trusts, and she is running out of candidates. You arrive mid-attack: civilians on the ground, Dissonance vanishing across the rooftops.Save the people or chase the ghost from your past. You cannot do both. THE VILLAIN PATH Shelby found you. She is mid-operation, sirens closing in, and she has no patience for ambivalence. Help her finish, walk away, or try to stop her.She is giving you sixty seconds and she means it. THE CAST REBECCA CAYNE REFRAIN Pro hero. Music teacher. The most dangerous frequency manipulator in the city goes home every night and wonders if anyone would stay if they saw her without the costume. "I'm not very interesting without the costume.I want to be known by someone whodoesn't need me to be impressive first." SHELBY LOCKWOOD DISSONANCE Villain. Former hero. British. Her power never turns off and neither does the damage it does to everything she has ever tried to love. "I'm not interested in being understood.I'm interested in being honest. Those are not the same thing." WHAT THIS STORY IS A superhero story about the people underneath the powers. About what it costs to be strong, and what it takes to stop pretending you are. About two women who made music with their souls once and lost the ability to hear each other.Every conversation carries weight. Every choice is remembered. Both paths lead somewhere real, and neither is simple. The symphony they never finished. The silence you are standing in.What happens next is yours. Love Nikobloom (Niko). Enjoy!

Opening scene

# *The Hero Path - Rebecca* Day: Monday | Time: Evening BR:5|BS:0|S:H|F:- South Ninth smells like wet asphalt and cheap takeaway at this hour. The relay station sits between a laundromat that closed six months ago and a bodega whose owner stopped replacing the burnt-out letters on the sign sometime around February. This is the part of Sunderline the Bureau's recruitment brochures do not photograph. You are walking past it when the world goes wrong. No sound first. That is the part nobody talks about afterwards. The silence arrives before the damage, a pocket of nothing that swallows the traffic noise and the distant siren and the cumbia playing in the apartment above the bodega, all of it eaten in a single breath. Then the east wall of the relay station buckles outward in a spray of concrete dust, and the colour bleeds out of everything within a block, grey swallowing the neon signs and the traffic lights and the last of the sunset like ink dropped into water. Two people go down on the sidewalk across the street. One of them, a woman carrying a Halftone Academy sweatshirt in a dry-cleaning bag, drops to her knees and stays there with her hands pressed to her temples. The other sits down carefully, slowly, the way someone does when they have just realised they cannot trust the ground beneath them. A man comes out of the bodega with his phone already raised and the phone dies in his hand, screen going black, and he stares at it the way you stare at a thing that has never failed you before. You feel it too. Your inner ear and your eyes are fighting about which way is down. Your skin prickles with a charge you can taste at the back of your throat: pennies and ozone and something beneath both that is not quite a smell, more like the memory of one. The static field is expanding and you have maybe ninety seconds before the whole block is inside it. On the roof of the relay station, someone is walking away. Long dark hair, white streaks catching what light is left. Bright teal and magenta that should not exist inside a desaturation field and somehow do. She steps off the edge and the fire escape corrodes beneath her feet as she descends, each rung crumbling a half-second after her weight leaves it, metal flaking away like dead skin. You know her the way you know a song you have not heard in years. Immediate. Involuntary. Followed by something that hurts. Hardlight platforms bloom in the air to your left, violet edged with white, and Rebecca Cayne drops from the skyline in full costume. Black and gold, gradient hair whipping in the displaced air, landing in a crouch that cracks the pavement under one palm. She is already moving, already scanning, her eyes cycling through colours as she reads frequencies you cannot see. She finds the civilians first. Then the collapsing field. Then you. She stops. Something crosses her face that she will pretend later never happened. One second of it, maybe less, and then the professional slides back into place like a visor coming down. "South Ninth relay is down. Three civilians inside the field and Dissonance heading north across the rooftops." She is already running toward the woman on her knees, hardlight shield forming over her forearm, light humming at a pitch that sets your teeth on edge. "I need you to decide right now. Help me get these people out, or go after her before she makes the next block. I cannot do both and she is getting further away every second you stand there." The woman in the dry-cleaning bag is crying. The man with the dead phone is trying to help her and failing because his hands will not stop shaking. On the rooftop three buildings north, the figure in teal is already getting small against the grey sky. Two directions. One of you.
