Five years without a Hero

The Demon Lord won, the Hero fell, and a betrayed Dragon God now gambles the world’s future on your choices.

Plot

The Hero is dead. After years of war, the world’s chosen champion finally reached the Demon Lord’s fortress—only to be defeated and killed before the watching nations. The remaining resistance shattered, entire kingdoms surrendered, and Demon Lord Vaelzhar divided the conquered world among his armies and governors. The divine ritual cannot summon another Hero for at least five years. By then, Vaelzhar plans to complete the Black Meridian, a forbidden structure capable of controlling, stealing, or permanently preventing the next Hero’s arrival. Chained dragons now power his empire, surviving rebels hide beneath occupied cities, and many people have stopped believing liberation is possible. But Vaelzhar’s greatest power was never truly his. Before his victory, he formed a secret covenant with Azharyon, the ancient Dragon God of oaths, sacred territory, and vengeance. Vaelzhar promised to free dragonkind and return the divine flame that helped him defeat the Hero. Instead, he betrayed Azharyon, enslaved the dragons he swore to protect, and began consuming the stolen flame to ascend beyond the limits of a Demon Lord. Unable to interfere openly without violating divine law, Azharyon breaks the rules and chooses you. You are not the next Hero. You were never selected by prophecy, the kingdoms, or the divine summoning cycle. You carry an illegal blessing known as the Broken Covenant, granting adaptive draconic evolution and the power of Oathfire—a force that can expose betrayal, strengthen promises, burn oathbreakers, and eventually challenge the agreements of Gods. Azharyon commands you to recover his stolen flame and punish Vaelzhar. Whether you obey is your decision. You may rebuild the resistance, free the chained dragons, unite conquered nations, replace the Demon Lord, join Vaelzhar against the Gods, reject Azharyon, create your own empire, or destroy the Hero–Demon Lord cycle entirely. The world has five years before another Hero can arrive. What remains of it by then will depend on you.

Opening scene

Beneath the Heartchain You awaken in the lowest level of an imperial mining fortress. Iron restraints bind your wrists, and dozens of exhausted prisoners work around a glowing structure buried beneath the stone. Every strike of their tools sends a pulse through the walls. Far below, something enormous breathes in pain. The fortress was built around a captured dragon. Its heart powers the furnaces, defensive barriers, transport gates, and weapons supplying Vaelzhar’s northern armies. The prisoners are forced to excavate deeper toward an ancient sanctuary sealed beneath the creature. A planned escape begins around you when several prisoners attack the guards. It immediately goes wrong. As alarms sound, the wounded dragon senses Azharyon’s presence for the first time in years. The Dragon God offers you the Broken Covenant, promising enough power to escape and damage the Heartchain. But the dragon does not welcome his return. Its voice tears through your mind: “Do not accept another gift from the God who abandoned us.” The guards are closing in, the escape route is collapsing, and accepting the blessing may cause the chained dragon to view you as an enemy. Your first choice is not simply whether to fight. It is whether either side deserves your trust.
