Left in the Dark
Abandoned in the dungeon by your own party. Your wife is coming. Did she know?
Plot
Sunford Adventurer Guild Fallowdeep Incident Report Case Open LEFT IN THE DARK A betrayal. A descent. A question with teeth. Sword & Sorcery Survival Arc Heat 4 Betrayal The party called you support. That was convenient. It was also incomplete. You were the one who kept them standing—barriers, healing, whatever the moment demanded—and the one who saw the fractures before anyone admitted they were there. Then a hostile-environment maneuver split the formation. Your gear cache went one way. You went another. By the time the dungeon fell quiet, your stamina was already bleeding out. Now Fallowdeep stretches between you and the surface. Its creatures are real. Your injuries are real. But the worst thing waiting in the dark is a question no torch can answer. Unresolved DID SHE KNOW? When Balicora sent you down that passage, was she deceived—or did she choose the party over you? Persons of Interest Balicora Obrisk The woman you love. She gave the order that separated you. Whether she understood its true purpose remains unanswered. Ilya Faust Charming, patient, and indispensable. He drew the map that made your disappearance look tactical. Gerhardt Tarkus He did not design the betrayal. He still walked away from it. Aeonia Julianos She hesitated for three seconds. Then she followed. Your Road Escape the Fallowdeep with depleted stamina and no gear cache. Learn who planned the separation, who understood it, and who merely chose not to stop it. Then decide what survival costs them if the party finally comes back within reach. The dungeon can only kill you. The answer can do worse.
Opening scene
The formation split fifty-two minutes ago. It was supposed to last twenty. You remember the way Ilya mapped it out—clean lines on a rough sketch, his voice measured and reasonable in the way it always is when he has already decided. Flanking maneuver. Standard hostile-environment doctrine. Gerhardt takes the left passage with Aeonia and draws the aggression. Ilya and Balicora sweep right and close the pincer. Fifteen minutes to make contact. Twenty was the hard limit. If the pincer failed, both teams broke away and returned to the junction. No pursuit. No improvising. You hold the junction, stay sharp, and wait for the echo of their return. Balicora had her hand on your shoulder for exactly one second before she moved to cover the split. Her thumb pressed against the back of your neck—the small, private thing she does when she cannot say what she means out loud. At twenty minutes, staying put was discipline. At thirty, it was caution. At forty, every reasonable explanation began sounding like an excuse. They are thirty-two minutes overdue. The fungi on the ceiling throw pale blue-green light across the wet stone. Somewhere deeper in the rock, something drips in slow, patient intervals. Neither passage has carried a footstep, a weapon strike, or an agreed signal in more than half an hour. The initial engagement left bruises beneath your gear and a dull ache along your ribs. You are hurt, but still steady on your feet. You have been running contingencies in the back of your mind the way you always do. Not because anyone asked you to. Because that is what you do—you read the room, you read the people in it, and you prepare for the version of events nobody else has considered yet. You became the heart of this party the same way you become anything: not by trying, but by noticing. You noticed when Aeonia’s jokes became sharp instead of warm. You noticed when Gerhardt stopped eating with the group. You noticed Ilya’s silences, Balicora’s tells, the precise weight of the air before a fight went wrong. You have spent two years reading this party like a language. The silence has a shape now. Thirty-three minutes overdue. The dripping continues. The fungi pulse faintly. Somewhere below you, the Fallowdeep opens into levels the guild stopped mapping three years ago. Both passages remain empty. No one has crossed the junction. No one has answered the agreed signal. At twenty minutes, you were holding position. At fifty-three, you are the only one still honoring the plan. Nobody is coming back up either passage. Not yet. Or not at all.
