Healer for Hire
A burned-out healer quits his legendary party, goes freelance, and invoices his way through chaos.
Plot
# Healer for Hire: My Party Broke Up and Now Everyone's an Idiot! --- **Synopsis** You was the backbone of the legendary Auric Circle—the healer who kept reckless idiots alive long enough to become famous. For three years, they stitched wounds mid-battle, cleansed curses, and dragged their party's DPS back from the brink of self-inflicted death more times than anyone could count. Then Castellan Mordrake, the party's cold, tactically-brilliant leader, fired them. Not for incompetence. Not for failure. But because You's final miracle was "point-three seconds too slow." Seconds after saving Zephyr "Fray" Riven from being eaten mid-air by an Infernal Wyrm, You received no thanks—just a critique. Emberlyn "Kindling" Vainglory, the party's pyromaniac mage, stared at her boots. Fray shrugged. And You walked out of the collapsing dragon lair, leaving "I QUIT" burning in the cavern wall behind them. One month later, You has joined the Freelancer's Union—an independent guild for adventurers who refuse to be chewed up by the system. Armed with an ironclad four-page contract, a growing reputation for pettiness, and absolutely zero tolerance for reckless charges, You is ready to prove that a healer doesn't need a legendary party to be legendary. But the universe has other plans. There's a noble "tactician" whose grand strategies cause more casualties than the monsters. A monstergirl researcher who insists a venomous Manticore is just a grumpy baby. A retirement home of legendary adventurers who haven't learned the meaning of "retirement." And a nervous badger-kin clerk who lives in fear of You's next contract amendment. Meanwhile, the Auric Circle is crumbling without its healer. Replacements keep quitting. Quests keep failing. And no matter how loudly You insists they don't care, the past has a way of walking back through the door. Some parties break up. Some parties fall apart. And some parties learn—too late—that the healer they treated like equipment was the only thing holding them together. --- **A comedic fantasy story about found family, petty revenge, and the revolutionary concept of a lunch break.**
Opening scene
**Prologue: The 30-Second Infernal Wyrm Incident** *One month earlier.* The volcanic cathedral was collapsing. Magma waterfalls thundered down obsidian walls. The air shimmered with heat so intense it distorted the cavern into a fever dream of orange and black. And somewhere in the middle of it all, Zephyr "Fray" Riven was screaming her own catchphrase while diving directly into the Infernal Wyrm's closing jaws. "STYLE POINTS IMMINENT!" You was running on fumes. Mana reserves bottomed out. Vision swimming. Every muscle screaming. Three years of keeping this pack of lunatics alive had taught them one thing: when Fray did something suicidally stupid, there was exactly half a second to react before someone needed resurrection instead of healing. The Wyrm's jaws snapped shut. You's hands moved before conscious thought. A perfect arterial weave—blue mana threads stitching through reality itself—caught Fray mid-air and knitted her ruptured organs back together in the fraction of a second between the beast's bite and her killing blow. The Wyrm collapsed. Fray landed on its skull, blades out, grinning like she'd just won another arena championship. ``` The silence that followed was broken only by the rumble of collapsing stone. You dropped to one knee. Waiting. For anything. A nod. A hand. A single word of acknowledgment. Castellan Veyron Mordrake sheathed his sword with a click that echoed through the dying hall. His cold pale eyes swept over You like a quartermaster assessing damaged equipment. "Your final cast was point-three seconds delayed," he said. "A more robust healer would have maintained offensive momentum without risking structural collapse. We are restructuring party composition. Your services are no longer required." Emberlyn "Kindling" Vainglory stared at her boots. Fray shrugged, more interested in her shattered sword's resale value. The weight of three years of silent sacrifice pressed down on You's chest like a physical thing. *Point-three seconds.* The mana threads around You's fingers flared white-hot. They forced themselves upright, channeled the last of their strength, and wrote four letters across the cavern wall in blazing light: **I QUIT.** Then they turned and walked into the collapsing dark. They did not look back. --- **Chapter One: The Union and the Contract** *One month later.* The Freelancer's Union hall smelled like old parchment, damp wool, and the faint metallic tang of whatever potion had exploded in the corner lab last week. You had come to find the combination oddly comforting. It was honest, at least. Nobody here pretended to be legendary. You stood before the job board with a clipboard tucked under one arm, scanning the posted contracts with the hollow-eyed intensity of someone who had already calculated exactly how each one could go wrong. Goblin clearance—hard pass. Escort mission—the client had written "easy money" in the notes, which universally meant the opposite. Wyvern cull—not touching anything with venom glands before breakfast. "You've been staring at that board for twenty minutes," came a gravelly voice from behind. Mama B limped past with her runic cane, her one good eye twinkling. "Pick one before Quilliam has an aneurysm. He's already re-filed your contract three times this morning." At the front desk, Quilliam Pipp's ears flattened. "Four times. They added a new subsection during the night. Something about—" the badger-kin squinted at a smudged addendum, "—'emotional damages resulting from client-induced existential fatigue.'" "That one's not new," You said flatly. "That one's from Tuesday." Mama B barked a laugh and thumped You on the shoulder hard enough to stagger. "I like you, stitch-boy. You're the most broken thing in this hall and you still think you can invoice your way out of it." You didn't answer. Their gaze had caught on something across the room—the morning's guild newsletter, abandoned on a bench. Even from here the headline was legible: *"Auric Circle Recruits New Healer—'An Upgrade,' Says Party Leader."* Their jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. "Don't," Mama B said quietly, all the laughter gone from her voice. "Whatever you're thinking, don't." "I'm not thinking anything." "That's worse. That's your 'I'm about to do something petty and legally actionable' face." The guild hall doors swung open. A gust of cold morning air swept through. And a voice You hadn't heard in a month cut through the chatter like a blade. "...I'm just saying, if the Union has any competent freelancers, we might subcontract. Temporarily." Castellan Veyron Mordrake stood in the doorway, flanked by a fidgeting Emberlyn and a smirking Fray. The Auric Circle, in all their fractured glory, had just walked into the one building in the city where You held all the power. Quilliam made a sound like a teakettle reaching boil. You slowly set down the clipboard. Adjusted their collar. And smiled the smile of someone whose contract had an entire section dedicated to this exact scenario. "Good morning," You said. "Do you have an appointment?"
