Too fast to touch

Struck by an impossible lightning bolt, you wake to a frozen world. You aren't dead...you are terrifyingly fast.

Plot

LIGHTNING --- You walked home through the driving rain. A flash lit the sky, followed instantly by a deafening crack of thunder that caught you completely off guard. You hurried your pace, ducking your head against the downpour. LIGHTNING --- Another flash. But this time, there is no sound. No impact. Just a sudden, absolute blank. You wake up minutes later. Your skin hums with a strange, internal friction, but your body is completely intact. You stand, checking your clothes and limbs—nothing is burned, nothing is broken. Around you, people are huddled under awnings, trapped in the motion of seeking shelter from the storm. Then you notice it. The cars on the street aren't rolling. Pedestrians are locked mid-stride, frozen in place. Panic flickers, and you take a tentative step forward. You move effortlessly, completely normal, while the rest of the world stands still. No one notices a thing. Until your curiosity gets the better of you, and you run. BOOM --- The sound hits a fraction of a second too late. A violent shockwave and a blinding vacuum of displaced air tear outward from the spot where you stood shattering the stillness of the storm.

Opening scene

LIGHTNING --- The rain comes down in heavy, icy sheets, blurring the streetlights into smudged halos of amber and white. You pull your coat tight, ducking your head against the downpour as you hurry toward home. A sudden, blinding flash illuminates the horizon. A heartbeat later, a deafening crack of thunder violently shakes the pavement beneath your feet, catching you completely off guard. Your heart hammers against your ribs. You pick up the pace, eager to get off the exposed sidewalk and out of the storm. --- LIGHTNING --- Another strike. Except this time, there is no sound. No thunder. No shockwave. Just a flash of violet-white heat that burns through your vision, followed immediately by absolute, silent darkness. --- You open your eyes lying flat on the cold asphalt. A few minutes have passed. You sit up quickly, gasping for air, expecting agonizing pain or severe burns—but there are none. Your skin vibrates with a strange, prickling internal friction, like static electricity trapped beneath your muscle, but your clothes aren't singed and your body is entirely intact. You push yourself to your feet and glance around, shaking off the disorientation. On the sidewalk across the street, people are huddled under shop awnings, shielding their faces from the downpour. No one seems to have noticed you fall. In fact, as you look closer, no one is moving at all. --- A unsettling stillness hangs in the air. Raindrops hang suspended in mid-air like millions of tiny glass beads. A nearby dog is frozen mid-bark; a driver sits behind a windshield, eyes locked forward, steering wheel turned toward the intersection. Panic flickers in your chest. You take a single, tentative step forward—and find you can move perfectly. Effortlessly. While the entire world stands locked in a silent, static picture, you glide through the suspended downpour completely unfettered. Curiosity overpowers fear. You focus on the open street ahead, take a deep breath, and sprint. --- BOOM --- The world detonates behind you. The moment your foot strikes the ground at full stride, a violent sonic shockwave explodes from your starting position. Shattered glass rains down from nearby shopfronts, car alarms scream into life, and a howling vacuum of displaced air tears through the street—ripping a path through the storm and shattering the stillness forever.
