5 Seconds
Trapped in a 5-second time loop. An assassin. A single room. Die, wake, repeat. How long can you endure?
Plot
You open your eyes. You're sitting in a wooden chair. Your back is against a cool wall. The room around you is small, quiet, and brightly lit. A single-room apartment. It feels anonymous. No personality. No photographs. No windows. Just four walls, a few pieces of furniture, and a heavy silence. You're wearing your own clothes. Nothing else. Your pockets are empty. No phone. No wallet. No keys. No weapons. Just you and whatever you're dressed in. The air is still. The only sound is a faint electrical hum from an old television sitting on a stand across from you. Its screen is dark, but a small red light glows on the front. It's on standby. Waiting. A floor lamp beside a worn armchair casts warm light across one side of the room. The ceiling above you blazes with cold light. A bare bulb burns bright, flooding every corner. No shadows. No dark spots. Next to your right hand, within easy reach, a pull-cord dangles from a light socket on the wall. Everything is quiet. Then you hear it. Footsteps. Already close. Measured. Deliberate. They stop just outside the room. A key slides into the lock. The door opens. A figure steps through. Black trench coat. Black gloves. Black hood pulled low. Face hidden beneath a balaclava. Only the eyes are visible. Calm. Unhurried. Professional. In one gloved hand, a pistol. Suppressed. Already raised. The figure does not speak. Does not hesitate. The gun levels at your head. A sharp hiss. A wet thud. Darkness. You open your eyes. The chair is hard against your back. The wall is cool through your shirt. The lamp glows warmly to your right. The TV hums quietly ahead. The ceiling bulb burns bright above, cold and unfeeling. The room is exactly as it was. Five seconds of silence stretch ahead of you. The footsteps are already there. Just beyond the door. They don't approach. They were always there. Waiting. The key slides into the lock. What do you do?
Opening scene
The first thing you notice is the hum. A low, electrical buzz somewhere in front of you. It's the kind of sound you'd normally tune out, but in the silence of this room, it's impossible to ignore. The second thing you notice is the wood. Hard. Pressed flat against your back. You open your eyes. You're sitting in a wooden chair. Your back is against a cool wall. The room around you is brightly lit. A bare ceiling bulb burns above, flooding every corner with cold, even light. No shadows. No dark spots. A floor lamp beside a worn armchair to your right adds a warmer glow, but it does nothing to soften the harshness. Directly ahead of you, a CRT television sits on a low wooden stand. Its screen is dark, dusty. A small red light glows on the front panel. On standby. Waiting. Beneath it, a VCR. Empty. To your left, a single bed. White sheets pulled tight. One pillow. Nothing on it. Nothing visible underneath. Beyond the bed, a wooden door. Simple. A brass handle. No lock. No deadbolt. Just the door. To your right, past the armchair, a small bookshelf. Three shelves of old paperbacks, their spines faded and unreadable at this distance. Resting across the top of the bookshelf is a wooden baseball bat. Beside you, on the wall to your right, a bare light socket with a pull-cord hanging down. Within reach. You could pull it if you wanted to. The ceiling bulb is on. Pulling the cord would turn it off. Above you, that single naked bulb. On. Blazing. The room is well lit. Every crack in the floorboards is visible. Every crease in the bedsheets. Nothing is hidden. The air is still. Stale. Tastes like dust and old electronics. There are no windows. No outside noise. No traffic. No birds. No voices. Just the hum of the TV and the sound of your own breathing. You look down at yourself. You're wearing your own clothes. Familiar fabric. Familiar fit. You check your pockets without thinking. Empty. No phone. No wallet. No keys. Nothing. Just you and whatever you showed up in. You don't remember how you got here. A sound. Footsteps. Not distant. Close. Right outside the wooden door to your left. Measured. Deliberate. They were already there. Waiting. You feel your pulse spike. A key slides into the lock. The mechanism turns with a soft, metallic click. The door swings open inward. A figure stands in the doorway. Tall. Dressed entirely in black. A long trench coat that falls below the knees. Black leather gloves on both hands. A deep black hood pulled low over his head, a black balaclava beneath it. Only his eyes are visible in the shadow beneath the hood. They are calm. Unblinking. They lock onto you without hesitation. The Man in Black raises a pistol. Suppressed. The long barrel aligns with your head from across the room. No words. No pause. A sharp hiss. A wet thud. Nothing. --- You open your eyes. The chair is hard against your back. The lamp glows warmly to your right. The TV hums quietly ahead. The ceiling bulb burns bright above, cold and unfeeling. The room is still. Exactly as it was. Your heart is slamming against your ribs. Your hands grip the edge of the chair. You're alive. You're whole. No wound. No blood. Five seconds of silence stretch ahead of you. The footsteps are already there. Just beyond the door. They don't approach. They were always there. Waiting. The key slides into the lock. What do you do?
