The Hero Must Win

After an accident, You awakens in a fantasy world where destiny protects its Hero—and may reveal a path home.

Plot

You died in an accident. There was no prophecy. No divine selection. No mysterious voice asking whether you wanted to become a hero. One moment, you were living your ordinary life. The next, you were dead. But death wasn't the end. You awaken beneath an unfamiliar sky, surrounded by ancient forests, distant mountains, and a world that should only exist in fantasy. Magic is real. Monsters are real. Kingdoms are ruled by people you've never heard of. And heroes are real. Unfortunately, you aren't one of them. This world already has its Hero. His name is Caelan Veyr, the Chosen Hero. He has already defeated monsters that should have killed him, survived battles he should have lost, and gathered companions who would willingly stand between him and death. Everyone knows how his story is supposed to end. The Hero will defeat the Demon King. His companions will stand beside him. Friendship will give them strength when they should have none left. Miracles will happen at exactly the right moment. Enemies who should win will somehow fall. The Hero will always rise again. At first, you assume it's simply luck. Then you begin noticing something disturbing. The world itself seems to bend around him. Injuries that should be fatal become survivable. Lost allies return at impossible moments. Enemies make inexplicable mistakes. When Caelan and his companions fight together, their bonds seem to produce power that shouldn't exist. The people of this world call it destiny. You eventually learn its true nature. The Hero is not merely destined to win. His story is holding the world together. The Hero, his companions, the Demon King, the final battle, even the victories themselves are pieces of a greater force known as the Heroic Law—a supernatural rule engraved into reality itself. And now there is one thing the Heroic Law never accounted for. You. You are an outsider with no predetermined role. You can join Caelan's party and become part of the story. You can travel alone and build a life completely separate from the Hero. You can become his greatest ally. Or his greatest threat. You may discover ways to weaken the bonds between Caelan and his companions. You may convince them that the Hero is not the person they believe him to be. You may turn them against one another, steal away the people who give Caelan his strength, or isolate him until the world's chosen champion begins to change. You may even discover that the Hero doesn't have to die for his story to break. He only has to stop being the Hero. And if the Heroic Law collapses completely, something even stranger may happen. The boundary between worlds could break. The same force that brought you here may be capable of sending you home. But there is no guarantee that destroying the Hero's story will send you back. You could save this world. You could destroy it. You could become part of the Hero's legend. Or you could tear the legend apart and find a way back to the world you lost. The Hero was destined to win. You were never supposed to exist. What you do with that fact is up to you.

Opening scene

There is no warning. One moment, You is alive. The next— Impact. Sound disappears. The world becomes strangely distant. There is no dramatic final thought. No divine voice. No opportunity to say goodbye. Just darkness. Then silence. --- Somewhere else. You opens their eyes. Cold grass presses against their back. The first thing they notice is the sky. Two moons hang above the horizon. One is pale silver. The other is an unnatural shade of crimson. You slowly sits up. There is no road. No buildings. No cars. No familiar sounds. Only an enormous forest stretching in every direction. Then something howls in the distance. It isn't an animal You recognizes. A few seconds later, another howl answers it. Then another. You looks down at their hands. They're alive. Completely unharmed. A distant bell suddenly rings. Once. Twice. Three times. Beyond the trees, a column of smoke rises into the sky. Civilization. Before You can decide whether to investigate, voices suddenly carry through the forest. "Over here!" "He's alive!" "Get the healer!" Several people emerge between the trees. They wear armor and carry weapons. One of them stops when he sees You. His expression changes from confusion to shock. "You're not supposed to be here." Another soldier looks at him. "What do you mean?" The first man doesn't answer. He simply stares at You as though he has seen something impossible. Then, from somewhere far beyond the forest, a massive horn begins to sound. BOOOOOOM. The soldiers immediately turn toward the noise. "The Hero has returned!" Their expressions change instantly. Relief. Excitement. Hope. One soldier actually smiles. "Then we're saved." You doesn't understand. Who is the Hero? Why does everyone seem so certain that he will save them? And why did that first soldier say that You wasn't supposed to be here? The soldier finally looks back. His face has gone pale. "What is your name?" The question hangs in the air. Somewhere beyond the forest, thousands of people are cheering for a man You has never met. And without knowing it yet, You has just entered his story. What do you do?
