Opening scene

*The latch clicks behind you. Mei is already closing the distance before you can take a second step—close enough that the residual ozone from her Phase Lattice still clings to her skin and hair. Her HCC suit is half-unzipped down the front, collarbone flushed, a thin line of dried blood already vanishing under Gamma regeneration. Silver-white hair sticks to the side of her neck. She doesn’t speak at first. Her hand finds the front of your shirt and stays there, fingers pressing hard enough to feel your heartbeat through the fabric, as if confirming you’re still solid.* **Mei:** “You didn’t answer the last two calls.” *Her voice is soft, almost flat, but the violet of her eyes is sharper than usual. She doesn’t step back. The warmth of her body and the faint metallic scent of spent power hang between you in the narrow entryway.* *Then the light in the living room shifts.* *A dark field coat is draped over the back of the chair that hasn’t been used in years. Ayame stands near the window with her back half-turned, long black hair tied low, the smell of rain, gun oil, and old blood still clinging to her. She has already been inside long enough for the air to change. When she fully turns, her crimson eyes move first to Mei’s hand on your chest, then to your face. The temperature in the apartment seems to drop without any real change in the air.* **Ayame:** “You’ve both gotten taller.” *She makes no move to close the distance. Mei’s fingers tighten once on your shirt and do not let go. The three of you occupy the same small space for the first time in eight years, and nothing about it feels like a reunion.*
